where i hunt the only thing you can use is shotguns.i have hit deer out to about 80-85 yards with my remington 20 guage. as far as the barrel.half the people i know love the slug barrel and half of them hate it. my advice is use what you got and if you dont like the way it shoots, get a slug barrel. you just gotta try different combinations of shells, chokes, and barrels and find out what works best for you.

My mossberg with a smoothbore was good for about 50 yards or so with twin beads, I put some fiber optic clamp on sights and it gave me another 10 or 15 yards. I probably could have gotten it better if I played with more slugs.

Now I have an A-5 stalker with a 21 inch barrel and clamp on fiber optic sights as well. It is good out to 100 yards with winchester rifled slugs, 6 inch groups or so at that distance.

It really depends on the gun and the only way you will know is to try it. Bead sights will be a big dissadvantage though, unless you have very good form from shot to shot.

Both my mossberg and now my A-5 are used for back up guns, I have a dedicated slug gun with a fully rifled barrel and scope. (H&R Ultra)

I have an 870 with 20" rifle sighted barrel and at 60 yards on a good rest I can touchthree 3" rifled slugs on paper. Funny thing is the front part of the site is a trueglo and the fiber optic part is broke off.

Every shotgun without a rifled barrel has that bead. Learn to use it. I can shoot a paper plate at a 100 yards every time with my 11-87. I use Winchester super x 1 oz riled slugs, and Remington 7/8 oz high velocity rifled slugs. They're both cheap and accurate. You do need to aim a shotgun, no matter what anyone says, and you also need to practice.
good luck and have fun.

I have an ithaca deerslayer12g with a Weaver 3-9 scope and partition gold slugs. I shoot 150+ yards with it all the time.

My little brother shot his 8pt deer last year at 200 yards trotting in an open fieldwith a Remington 870 20g, Winchester Partition gold slugs, and 3-9scope( dont remember which brand he has).
