Actually you're right it isn't 174. I looked it up and it's only 172 2/16. (I was going by memory.)

RE: Got Shoulder Mount Back
K, here's the deal guys, I'm not going to argue w/you about score. The whole point of me posting this was for you guys to see his buck and hopefully for you guys to congratulate him as I did. After the first doubtful response, I did some checking on the contest (http://www.vpsa.org/) scoring and there are some differences:
SCORING DEER: The Virginia Big Game Contest uses the Virginia Scoring System which was developed by George Johnson in 1945. To the best of our knowledge the Virginia Scoring System predates the Boone & Crockett Scoring System used by many other states. Both Systems have many similarities in scoring. Primary differences is the tip to tip measurement, use of outside beam measured and the way non-symmetry is calculated.
So if anyone feels that I "misled" them I'm sorry. The point was and is: Isn't it a nice buck? It's a lot nicer than anything I've ever killed.

TN, it's a great buck, and I don't understand myself the obsession with estimating scores anyway. Who really cares, beautiful animal, no matter what the "official" score is. Pictures can be deceiving as well.
Tell him congrats from a huntin' girl who doesn't give a flying rat's patootie about scores...
