How do I know if the Rut has passed?
Usually by this time, the rut in mid florida has passed, but this year, we are not sure if it has happened yet. I hunted archery (opened 9/21) and ML (10/27), typically the time of the rut but activity has been very slow. However, now that gun season opened this weekend, I noticed increased buck movement. I also saw a small five point ejaculate Sat evening as he approached four does. He also started running and jumping, just acting silly. The does ran off though.
Anyway, we have had one buck killed and one of the guys said since the hocks are not black, the rut has not started. Is this true? Are there others ways to know. Also, this buck (killed Saturday) did not smell of urine. More experienced hunters have always said the rut is over by general gun but i am wondering if this is an exception year, but don't know how to know for sure.

The peak in Bradford county (Starke) was Oct 6. There are still some does going into estrus as much as 2-3 months after.
