Oh yeah nobody else was seeing deer during this time. i mean no bucks . i think it's cause the bucks know many days ahead what does are coming into estrus. how ? urine and scent trails of living breathing warm loving does.
Lets do a study . someone urinate in a cup . let it sit out for a couple hours and then freeze it and remove it. thaw it and let it sit another several hours or days . bottle it and let it sit another weeks or months. open that sucker up now and get a good inhalation of it. smell like it did on sample collection day?
I don't know! i have not done the study. just dreamed it up.

Soarkrebel, I hear ya and good story to boot!(I bumped to keep the post fresh BTW)

I know the area like I stated, pretty much to a T. What I was thinking would scents A) attract more bucks or other bucks (heck maybe even does) B) Useful in my normal hunting with the wind at my nose C) possibly bring that bad boy in who likes to lurk D) Possible cover my tracks (or my scent) E) its free man I still have my casholla for snickers and granola.

Now the last thing I want to do is spook the deer or others. Like I said I have read all the instruction and they suggest put sent out in pinwheel basically 180 from your location with the wind blowing from you to scent cannisters and finally your deer....this ain't what I am use to. Here's what I was thinking, first off I would do a drag rag, walk past my blind then circle back set up cannisters or wicks in possible shooting lanes in a pinwheel fashion 120-180 degrees....still have the scent blowing to me and wind in my nose. This would allow the deer to pick up the trail some wind push between drag rag line and cannister...he steps out to smell the roses and bullet to the lungs!!!!! So what you think? I don't know that this would hurt anything, but would it really do anything is the other thought? Guys who use scents do you really think the wind blowing to scent and deer is effective...I need to be educated (well actually talked into it) Oh I plan on rattling as well?

121553, I guess I don't know how to use them. Cause they seem to all state, as I mentioned a hundred times pinwheel with the wind to the scent and deer...which is all wrong in my deer school. Here lies my I don't know about this thoughts!!!! You say 360, so you indeed think they mask? Well to a point since you mentioned fox piss as a cover. I started this point to get feed back, info and instructions....so I am trying to buy into the scent theory.

As to the rut, I know it well and will be hunting prime rut. I learned that in my deer school as well. I planned on using estrous, in cohoots with my rattling.

I think if i was going to use scents i would find the best synthetic on the market. that old guy on a way hunting ,fred addas , i for some reason like him. pushes a synthetic .
i would use a dripper several days prior to hunting . they don't know its a dripper. this would give time for bucks to start responding and checking the area looking for that hot momma.
I might try the heating method you know scents on top of a low burner. just enough to cause evaporation. deer can pick up small particles of scent and i think this would put a lot of particles in the air.
I don't know just ideas. the story is true. i have a picture of both eight points togather. the first one was still in the cooler when i killed the second. my season for bucks was over in three days.
and they were VERY good bucks for south arkansas. all symetry(sp?) and good tine length. not some shabby little buck fever i got to shoot a raggedy buck buck! good bucks!!! see some people say i killed a 10 point ! yeah a 8" inside spread ,3" g2 2 year old buck! in south arkansas if he is 16" w/6 to 8" g2's he's good . one had 17 ,7" g2's. anyway i can't tell you canooks about big deer in the land of milo hanson! (I'm jeolous)

I have heard synthetics are the way to go, but can't find any here....YET. I am sure they will be on the shelf soon, cause they are talking of banning the use of deer urine in Sask next year due to CWD.

Oh I believe you soarkrebel, it was a good story, lets see the pics. I love deer pictures. You know Milo has 2 other B&C typical whitetails, unregistered. Yeap it is true a 170 and 173, he wasn't even going to score this one until all the hub bub.....and look now he is a star! I could tell you a story of how the world record was mear inches away from not being what it is and unscorable. It makes me wonder how many others are in the same boat. I have seen this deer many times, went to the official scoring in Bigger, Sk that fateful night. It is truly emmense, anybody who hasn't seen it up close should...WOW! Speaking of big deer unregistered my fatherinlaw has the nicest 4x4 I have ever seen. I asked can I please tape that deer...no...no..no, then I showed some of my deer, sheds and scores...he finally said OK. He grossed 174 3/8 yes a 4x4, but had massive trash to boot, ended up netting 160 7/8...15 years of drying time. Another can you say WOW. I always say that is one 4x4 I would pull pin in a heartbeat on, this was before the tape job and 15 years of drying time. Soarkrebel, many don't know how lucky we are here in Sask, but I do. One day my friend you'll be in chill land...but pack your woolie's and onepiece she is a little cooler than SOARK! Don't be jealous, get even come and shoot a bigger deer than me or the rest of us native sask boys...happens yearly.

OK I am way off my own topic, soark you did it again!

Skeeter let me clarify my statement. I use the tinks69 around my stand 360 degrees only during the peak of the rut in which is around the full moon in Nov.(NW Montana). The reason for this is because wind direction constantly changes thoughout the hunt. When I bow hunt in Sept/Oct., I may put a 35mm canister of fox urine in a couple places around my stand but I don't get carried away with it. I am not sure if this mask my scent or maybe give the deer a more relaxed approach. I know that it doesn't spook them. I do not use the tinks 69 to mask my scent but as an attractant for a nice Boone and Crockett. I use 6 35mm canisters with cotton balls dowsed in tinks 69. That big buck will come out of the thickets in search of a hot doe during the rut. I am one of those ole tymers and stick with what I know works cause I have seen the results. I am sure that those other companies scents may be just as good, but I am not in the position to experment. I am not sure if this is per manufactures direction, but is is what I use.

HUmmmm i could change my name to the sosaskrebel? south sask rebel!
I love to watch folks hunt in canada. out of every place i would go that would be number 1. I can believe it's cold. i spent two weeks in billings mt once in feb.
dude i didn't know it could get that cold! they just go on life as usual. a few of those guys ended up down here that summer and they about died. heat and humidity but not as bad a georgia!
i followed the hanson thing he seemed like a normal guy. had the head and rack hanging in his barn. had no idea how it would change his life. i saw somewhere that he said he might reconsider doing it all again if he had the chance. his life is so changed.
i saw a replica of the deer awesome ,unbelievable for a south arkansas boy.
I like the one where old bill jordan killed a 350 buck up there. sheez thats big no dragging that out.
one of these days skeeter!

Soark, you better watch Realtree outdoors this weekend, my TV guide said they are in Saskatchewan, Canada. You know get a taste for your new location SO SASK REBEL grounds

As far as Milo, if he is so sorry he did it, why doesn't he just sell the head, rights, take his replica mount and go back to life on the range. B/C he loves it!!!! He wasn't a trophy hunter persay or big time hunter like most of us, he just went during rifle shot decent bucks and filled the freezer...so he was an ordinary guy. He shoots the monsta "Star, limo, cash, free stuff, pictures, cash, more free stuff, cash and so on (did I mention cash yet?)" I think I would just hide the rack, ummm maybe not. Heck you might see one of our mugs taking his place one day, believe if Milo did it so can you! As I mentioned he was mear inches in 2 cases on that buck for not being where he is today. If your bored I'll tell you the rest of the story another time.

Hey Guys, update. Finally I found a scent company and instruction who think like me. James Valley Scents, BigJon sent me a tester of his "Leathal Weapon" this week. I just read his instruction sheet and right their it states, never scent or set up scents in the downwind fashion. He states that the scent should be placed upwind of your location in shooting lanes in V pattern. If drag rag, don't allow the deer to run downwind of your stand placement. This is the first how to on scent I have read that thinks like me, maybe this is part in parcel why I haven't liked scents...b/c they all say the opposite. I just couldn't get me tiny weeny peanut around that theory. Man i am tickled pink now, still confused but at least someone out their thinks "hey wind in the nose is a big deal, even with scents" THanks BIGJON...I needed that.

So now I have some back up...woooooo. Scent users, what do you do with your scents cannisters, wicks...what ever? I would like to start a mini poll on this using my orginal post, so let's here it!

Anybody ever used Scent Sheilds "Still Steamin"? I heard a couple of guys at the gunshop tonight singing it's praise. I saw the girl ring it in and it was like double that in price of any of the other scents.

Thanks all, I appreciate it!!!!!

About 10-12 years ago I used the Tinks megatarsal and used it as a drag (behind me)on my way to my stand. I came Indiana to visit from So. California and was only in for a long weekend. Not a half hour into the season a medium sized 4 point followed the drag line right to where I hung the gland in a tree. I filled my cooler right then and there. The same thing happened the next year. I wasn't trophy hunting, I needed venison for the freezer. For only a few hours of scouting, I think it helped. I don't know if there is anything on the market now that is any better - I haven't had much luck with scents in the past few years. Maybe I'm paying more attention to trying to be where the deer are?

I do have a couple of the Wildlife Research drippers, and they do work. I just haven't harvested a deer that came to one yet. Maybe this year..........
