I didn't use anything my first two years of hunting and didn't have any luck. Last year I caved and used some Tink's. Had a bloody Moose come lumbering in at around 1PM opening day. The next day, as some know I had to pack out, had an 8-pointer in a stare down. This year I have it in my bag again. Can't really say based on my limited experience, but our group has 2 guys using and two guys not using, not including me. The using two have outshot the non using two 18 to 4.

Just my experience, but the numbers are spooky.

Haven't used the Wildlife research stuff yet, but based on my success or failure this year and what I hear about the stuff, I may switch next year.

I personally am not a big fan of scents. I have not decided if I will use them next week or not. I have seen a lot of nice deer without using scent, but have not yet seen that trophy buck. Then again I have only been out for 3 years but some of my buddies are very experienced hunters and they have had some great success without scents. 2 years ago my uncle shot a nice 12 pointer without using scent. Then again I have had some buddies that swear by using the scents that get some nice deer every year. All of my buddies success has been with the (doe in estrus) scent. They do work! They use the wicks. Last year one of my buddies shot a nice 8 pointer and the buck was actually licking the wick he put in the bush when he shot it. I am just hesitant to use them because I personally feel that being totally scent free is the way to go. Any new scent in the area is going to make the buck more cautious and I believe the buck will be more alert. Does the scent lure them in? Probably. Would it make a huge buck curious? Absolutley. I just personally feel scent free is the way to go. Cant go wrong. I do have one buddy that uses the dominant buck scent, but I am not certain how he uses it. I will follow up with him and let you know.

Humm have you tried Bubba's hot doe want some buck lure?

Drink some bud light and piss all around your hunting area. the hops ,barley and the little estrogen that all men have in them will drive them crazy.

soarkrebel, I know barley works...ain't to sure about the hops though. I would ask for free sample from old "Bubba" but ain't sure if it will be fresh enough!

To the others, thanks. I am in the same boat here, I like no scent, I hunt with the wind on my nose. The scents seem to say the opposite, so it really goes against my code or norm way. I have tried a couple with limited success, one of which was tinks 69, it sent a ave size buck running for cover when he sniffed it off my mrs. monthly rag. I also tried some other type and the buck paid no attention to it, he just walked right on by. I stopped him with a grunt and dropped him flat on his back. Now I did have the wind in my nose, so maybe he didn't smell it....but he walked right past the rag filled with estrous. That time I was rattling so he might have been looking for a fight....however I would think the smell of love would win....NO?

I was personally thinking of just using the estrus scent, I haven't really heard to many that like buck or musk. Since it is free I ain't out any cash olla, but I would hate to sit with the wind on my ears and spook big fat daddy! Is it stupid to still hunt the wind, place the estrus out in front in possible shooting ranges like 100-200 yards in a pinwheel? This may provide my backdoor some cover, when rattling. What ya'll think? I have done a research and this goes against all company instructions, so it may just do the opposite and send them up my backdoor. You see my spot usually has deer funneling from east to west, I prefer a south wind, B/C my buck (the one I want) beds to the south in the diamond willows. I found the perfect set up that will catch him moving most likely east through some timbers, triing to get to my backdoor. Of course this is assuming he ain't roaming to the north looking for love(which I have never seen him in). Does hang almost everywhere so I can't really hope or point to an exact area, just move to this natural funnel to a meadow to the east and west(doubles as a food source)...the does are really all around me, with exception of north which is pretty thick for the girls. The bucks hang in their sometimes, I usually rattle them out if in the mood to my west or spook them upon arrival. This is ground blind hunting too! Now the other thing that has got me scent thinking is we usually (except the past 2 years) have north/northwest winds. Which doesn't really favour this honey hole to well. I can and have done the super wide swoop and come in his backdoor, if only we have a NW. Anything else I don't even bother. Now would scents maybe help in masking my presence in the area on these North winds, still from the south side?

Now that I gave you almost every piece of detail except the score of my ghost, does this sound good? Is scents going to work? Or should I stick to my routine and maybe try scents in my back up spots when the wind isn't favourable for this spot?

WOW!!! I think its very intresting that it appears most here don't or are skeptical about the use of scents. If you don't know how to use them... then don't. What I am trying to do when I use scents is ( I am talking about doe estrus dureing the rut) to get that buck to believe that their is a hot doe around. If you know when the rut is take some tinks 69 out in some 35mm canisters and use latex gloves when setting the canisters out. Wind direction always changes so put canisters 360 degres around you, and not near you. The only scent I may use prior to the rut is a drop or two of fox urine to confuse my scent, and maybe buy an extra second or two in order to get a shot off. Find out when the rut is and then hunt it hard and long and then start useing the doe in estrus, I have had great luck in doing this and have shot two bucks comeing into my canisters, and missed an oppurtunity when one was 3yrds from me. Do I believe in em... Yepper, but I am not familiar with the brand name mentioned. Good luck and gettem, Bobby

The way i see scents is this . does come into estrus and it takes a couple of days to reach peak. now the bucks have been following her for days . she does alot of travelling leaving a scent trail for all to follow if they want her love. putting a cold scent that was taken last year and frozen all year is it going to really smell like the doe that left a scent trail.

I was hunting a thicket once a few years ago in a climber. i shot this good 8 point first thing on the first morning. i thought heck i need to go back and hunt there some more. i did that afternoon. and saw like 10 bucks all small. all headed for a swamp. the next day i saw a few more bucks in the morning and one 4 point with a doe but he was just hanging with her .I returned that afternoon. now i got the show of my life. i wasn't there long when i hear a crashing in the brush and it stopped . then i hear a gutteral grunting and the crashing again. well i thought the big daddy was coming as the crashing got closer.
a doe comes running toward my tree and i am ready . a little toe head buck grunting like the big daddy was on her butt. he stomped and grunted. they did this a while and here comes more bucks. they chased this poor doe around me for a hour. all the sudden they stop and look in one direction. i (sitting motionless and in pain)thought ok the big daddy. i see a big bodied deer coming through the brush and he steps out in the logging road a good 100 yards from the doe who is hiding in a brush top. the biggest 4 point i have ever seen, had at least a 17 spread. raises his head smells the air and takes off for her, now bear in mind he can't see her the stuff is thick. goes right to her. the chase is on. i watched this all afternoon . i mean they were right under the tree had the toe head laying down at the base of my tree. i spit on him and he just laid there.
at dark i was coming down and they spooked and i saw a buck i had not seen. a good 8 point. i was bummed. next morning same tree . i saw the 4 point again headed off in the other direction. i thought huh is it over. i just looked to my right and there stood a 8 point ,40 yards. i went to get a shot and that sucker looked up my tree . i stopped him by just bellowing with my mouth and killed him. good deer.
my lesson was deer know what deer smell like in there area. they live togather all year and communicate through scent. i think i will take my chances on getting close to an old ho like that doe and hoping she is coming in . i think the way to do that is to get into bedding areas heck maybe deer like it in the bedroom also. this day they did. just my opinion and experience. i will spend my money on food to eat to keep me out there . i think the longer your out the higher your chances. persistance pays off!
