I think it helps the game warden see you much better. Hey wait a min. the game warden dosen't wear any orange come to think of it I wonder why and how many of them are shot every year.

I think you can see people better but its not necessary as you must see your target and ID it before you shoot. The old days of shoot anything that moves are over for the most part there will always be idiots at everything but for the most part people are much safer today. Thank god for hunters safty classes and requirements. But it does help the warden find you better.

Someone is shot every year in La. because of mistaken identity. It amazes me how a person cannot distinguish a deer from a human being. I guess I just don't understand. These people should not be allowed to own a gun. I hunt on my own property but still wear an orange cap while rifle hunting. That is all we are required to wear in La. while hunting on private land. It's just not worth the risk. I definitely believe hunter orange reduces the number of accidents or deaths in the field, but it still doesn't totally do away with them. There are always going to be idiots out there with guns. Wear orange, it's the law.

It may help stop accident in a case where an idiot is in the woods, but any halfway reasonable hunter with brains knows that a deer is not
flourescent orange. If you don't know the difference between a deer and orange or for that matter 'brush blowing in the wind', you should not be allowed to hunt, period!

True story:
A few years ago, I was hunting on a GA WMA (public hunting) where I was at the check station checking out some of the deer that had been brought in. I struck up a conversation with another 'hunter' about his day. We I asked him if he had seen anything, he said "No, but I got off several brush shots". Needless to say, I haven't been back.

A better solution might be to not hunt near idiots. I realize however that many hunt public land and many poachers who are idiots could come on your property, so there is a valid argument for wearing it and increasing your odds of survival.

BrushChimp,

Down here in the deep South, we hunt safely and ethically. This is not some litter infested biohell like some folks are used to up north. We keep our woods pristine and free from Yankees when possible.

Down here, we suit up in coverhauls and mesh hats. Respect. NEVER go to the stand without our hunters orange over our top half. Once had a guy come hunting with me at the family farm. He was not a true hunter, but was interested so I figured what the heck - I like to teach and this guy gave me the respect I demanded.

He got out of the pick up with no hunters orange and not only that, but did not have camo. Wore flesh tone sweat pants. I was embarrassed and furious. I left him at the camp and told him to wait patiently - that I would be back shortly. I left him there for 5 hours or so, long enough for me to enjoy a hunt and several pinches of snuff whilst observing 7 different whitetails in a wet bottom area of the farm. Got back and learned at that time that his folks were from New Jersey! That explained it right there and needless to say, this young man was never allowed out to my family farm again.

When on Public land I wear 100% Orange, head to toe! There is no reason in my mind not to! On my property I wear 50% Orange, The top half is full on orange!

Something else to consider is that some idiots will point their loaded rifle at an orange object as they look through their scope trying to see if the orange is indeed a hunter or just who it might be.If they don't see you at all, odds are that this won't happen.
I only had this happen once in 40 some odd years of hunting. The guy was a jerk and I went up and told him so. Pointing your gun at anything other than your target (game) is bad. I really believe hunter orange will cause accidents to decline dramatically.
