Could have been a big deer. I heard they pretty big in Iowa. All that snort means to me is its time to pack up, load gun to the fullest and get the hell out of there and try to figure out what it was when your back at camp. How close was the grunt to you do you think?

Did you look for tracks the next day. It might help you I.D. the creature.
I like to go with the notion it was one of those giant squirrel farts.<img src=icon_smile_clown.gif border=0 align=middle>
Lifes a garden, dig it.

I was huting with my back to a bean field. Deer have not been in that area as they are moving down below me and paying more attention to a near by corn field. It was close. To my left is really thick cover and woods where I very seldom see deer, no tracks, trails etc. That is where it came from. I have not been back yet to look for tracks. There should be somke as it has been very wet.
I will respond to that question soon.

Try going back there and position your stand facing the direction of the thick cover where you heard the grunt. Set up your stand so you can see the corn field and the thick cover (if possible) and make sure your stand is setup so the wind dont give you away. My guess it was a big buck and I would be looking for as much evidence for buck signs as possible in the area. Maybe the big boy was coming out of the thick cover later because he knew you were in the area before-hand. Maybe try a new spot close to the area where you think you heard the noise. I personally think it was a buck who came out of the thick cover late and just ran into you. How was the wind blowing? Were you up wind or down wind of the noise?

Last night while hunting I heard a noice that made me about wet myself. At dark I heard the loudest noise I have ever heard in the woods. It sounded like a huge hog snorting. Much louder than any deer I have ever heard. Came from behind me where I never see deer. Occurred twice but I never seen anything. I snorted relunctantly back at what ever was, maybe a good thing I never found out.
Any thoghts about what I heard. I am pretty sure that it was no deer, much too loud but diffinitly an animal. I was hunting in central Iowa, no hogs around that I know of.

I have heard a buck snort before, LOUD AS HECK!! the thing must have been 30 yards from me and it scared the crap out of me. Sometimes deer will do that to make you move or jump if they think you're there.

I was dowwn wind of where the noice came from. A stong N. West wind was blowing.
I know there are many dee in the area. I chased a doe out of the area when I went in at 3. I didn't see anything the rest of the evening which was very unusual for me.
Maybe there was a buck that was bedding down next to me for the majority of the evening.
I am very scent cautios and also have been very quit gettin into the area as I know myself and my brother have put allot of hunting pressure in the area.
Wow. I can't wait to get back out.probably won't happen unti Sunday evening as I have too many family commitment to take care of.
