can whitetails tell human urine from animal urine?
can whitetails distinguish human urine from other types? I have heard yes and no. I was wondering if anyone has had an experience, or any information that might help me. I have heard of using a pee bottle when in a stand. Is this helpful or not even needed? I would appreciate any help.

There will be no difference in your urine and a deer if all you eat is acorns, and rye, and clover and oh, drink from mud puddles and rivers...
If you want to disappear, you have to become the deer.
Hey, that is pretty astute...I even impressed myself!

Deer can tell each other by urine. They can DAMN WELL distinguish from humans.

RE: can whitetails tell human urine from animal urine?
I believe they can
I know all about the Deer & Deer Hunting study that human urine attracted more deer than the doe urine (2nd place was new car smell)-
all that says is deer are very curious animals
I read where somebody said that they can't tell "predator" urine from "prey" urine. I don't buy it. I can smell changes in my OWN urine when I go (hold on, I'll explain), so I know the deer can with their superb sense of smell.
Now, I'm not saying I'm getting down there and smelling my own urine (I know that's what some of you were thinking) - but do this experiment and see if it works with you.
Eat 2-3 bowls of Super Sugar Crisp cereal or Sugar Smacks in the morning ...when you go to the bathroom later, I will just about guaretee that your own urine will smell like that when you go. You may not be able to smell it unless you are using a urinal (I guess because it is up closer to you. )I'm positive that other things that we eat also will give off some sort of odor, though probaly not as strong, which may not be detectable to us, but certainly would to a whitetail or other animal.
Extra protein and vitamins that your body doesn't use are passed throught your urine. That's why when you take a multi-vitamin, your urine will become a dark yellow, as opposed to clear color. Somebody like me, that lifts weights and eats what is probaly an excess of protein per day, also taking several vitamins, probaly passes alot of both out. I would venture to guess that carnivores and omnivores probaly pass more protein out than herbavoires...I would also think that this would give it an odor that would make it differ from an herbavoires' urine.
Like I said, I'm NOT saying that human urine will spook deer, because they are so curious. Howeverm, I would think that if they were to smell human urine, than look up and see a human that takes a shot and misses, they would learn to associate that smell with danger.
Just my personal theories
Try the cereal experiment and you will see what I mean

I read in a book a while back, I think it was Charles Alzheimer "Whitetails by the Moon" That he urinates in a scrape to freshen it up. All these years of using a bottle up in the tree stand when I could have been freshening up a scrape or 2, LOL. I am with Deerhugger2 on this one as well.

A deer may not know that your urine is human but I believe the deer will know it is definately a smell that is normally not there. When you are in the woods just remember that you are in a deers living room. If something is out of place or different he will know it.

I totally agree with VAhunter regarding your being in their living room however deer are very inquisitive animals. last week we were up in the cabin beginning saturday morning 2 adult males and two children 10 and 12. We need to use Mother Earth as there is no bathroom facilities. Needless to say Sunday Morning standing around the car 20 feet from the cabin and 10 feet from our Pee area are four doe standing around wondering probably what the hell is going on as no one had been up there since last December.

I thot you were pulling the legs with the quote on Alzheimer. Turns out the spelling is Alsheimer so I guess you were? Pretty funny though. Sounds like he was suffering from the malady with that statement and had been doing so for years.
The indians would pee a circle around the gear to prevent wolves from coming in to steal their gear. Wolves can tell the difference and whitetails can't? Hmmmmm
