I also had the same question about the shavings under the tree? I found some rubs this year that were amazing. The deer literally tore the tree into shreads and it was taller than most I have ever seen. And no, we don't have bears here. I got a few pics, but not of the certain buck that damaged the tree.

well i don't have any bear or porkys. There are no lines in it were the tines would rub. but I just don't no all the other rubs are about 8inches thick. there is also the same thing on the other side but lower.

You see the limbs that have fallen from the tree from maybe ice.
It looks like the tree limbs that fell made the scrape marks on the tree.
If limbs fall they will make places on the trunk just like that.
Its really hard to tell from the picture but it looks like.
