Red,

It was clear that they were friends of "Jimmies" as the one gentleman states that "he has known Jimmy for a long time". This of course does not mean they were personal best friends. They may simpy have been paying regular customers that go there yearly to take management bucks. The reality is that they likely had already paid the 3500$+ fee for taking a management buck, but had no intentions of paying the fees for a true "trophy buck"

The other point that makes it obvious that these guys were pretty close to the owner/guides is the simple fact that were allowed to hunt without a guide. This is not allowed on most of these ranches for obvious reasons.(If a shooter wounds a buck that is not recovered the guide is obligated to estimate the rack size and the shooter pays for the buck regarless of whether the buck is ever recovered in the future. )

As far as the discussion of cost go...here is the prices...

DEER

Trophy Fees
Hunts Types Available

140-150 B&C $100/inch
Management Hunt - up to 140 B&C

150-160 B&C $200/inch
Limited Hunt - up to 155 B&C

160-170 B&C $300/inch
Super Hunt - Unlimited

170 B&C + $400/inch

Gratuity for guides and cook not included. (Average Tip: 10% of total hunt.)

Rifle - $3500 down + trophy fee
Example: 162 B&C is $3500 for hunt plus $1000 for 140-150, plus $2000 for 150-160 plus $600 for 160-162= $7100,total cost.

You also have to pay for taking a shot and missing, i think all hunts are video taped so they can estimate the score.

Charlie,

I have never heard of this from anyone, nor have I seen it on any outfitters pricing fact sheets. I am not sure this is correct, or at the least is not common practice.

Here is Perlitz actual fact sheet concering shots taken, it does not mention any costs associated with missing an animal..

Guides are present to assist. The hunter must make the final call. Wounded but not recovered animals will be scored by guide for pricing purposes.

What's the really huge ranch in Texas, I might be thinking of that one. Or maybe one of Jack Briittinghams places.

It was Jack Brittinghams place sorry.

Opportunity Fee
If a deer is shot at and determined by Rancho Encantado representatives as having been missed, you will be charged an opportunity fee of $500 if the deer is Silver Medal or less (< 135 gross) or $1,000 if the buck is Gold or Platinum level (136+ gross). If a buck is taken later in the hunt, this opportunity fee will be applied to the kill fees of the buck taken.
