Default A Marlin Mornin

Finally, a day out in the woods that did not feel like summer. This last saturday afternoon I took what I thought was a doe , but it ended up being a spike with its horns broke off close to its head. (In Texas, if the antlers break the skin, you have to tag it as a buck.)

This morning at about 7:45 I had what I thought were three doe come down the trail by my last minute (because of hurricane Rita) ladder stand. I got off two good shots at what I thought were two doe, and could have taken the third very confused young deer, but the limit is two doe so she lives to see another day. I thought I had filled my doe tags, and could now concentrate on a good buck, but when I got to the second deer it too was a spike with it's horns broke off barely above the skin. Almost a twin of the one I shot last saturday. He is the one on the front of the 4-wheeler.

I am left now with one more doe tag, and I think I had better take my field glasses to make sure it is a doe.

I have named this picture "A Marlin Mornin" it won over
" P.E.T.A Postecard"

If the antlers are not more than 3" long it is called "antlerless" here in MD and your buck tag would still be open. Check your regs. That may be the case where you are, too.

Thanks guys,
Even though my buck hunting is done for the year, I am always thankful for the meat. I probably could have seen right away if it was a button buck, because the brown pom poms (that's what they look like to me) are easier to see. This is a picture of what I am talking about. To me, the deer looked like a decent size doe. I will have to be a lot more careful going after my last doe.
