<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote<font size=1 face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>Assuming - I manage to get a shot at him and hit him. Then what?<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' size=2 id=quote>

Wait at least 30 minutes. Relax and regain your composure. Study the area you last saw the deer run through so you can be sure you'll recognize it from the ground. Say a little prayer of thanks.

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>1.) Are there any online tutorials on tracking? I've read the tracking threads but not sure if they are all inclusive. Are there any gotchas I can avoid?<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' size=2 id=quote>

Go to the bowhunting forum and read the reply that ksuie gave in the post called: good yet not so good experience. He provides excellent advice on tracking the deer. Basically, you find blood and follow the blood trail to the dead deer. Sounds easy but it can be very difficult sometimes.

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>2.) Do I gut and clean him right then and there?? [stupid question] Ok, so what equipment do I need to have in my pack to accomplish this properly?<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' size=2 id=quote>

Yes. I would say over 90% field dress the animal on the spot. Hey, the other critters need to eat too! The real reason is to remove the inners to help cool down the meat faster. Also helps to avoid contaminating the meat in case a shot caused any leakage from the stomach, intestines, bladder, etc. You can process the deer with a small knife. Some knifes have saw blades and/or gut hooks to help but these are not entirely necessary. Here is a good webpage on how to do it: http://www.angelfire.com/bc/canuck2/gutting.html

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>3.) How do I get him out of the forest without filling the carcass up with leaves and stuff?? I have a golf bag carrier so I'll use that to carry him on but it still leaves a lot to be desired on contamination prevention.<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' size=2 id=quote>

It won't happen. You'll get far less into the cavity than you think. they just don't fill up with leaves and dirt. I've dragged em through the woods before and had maybe one or two leaves show up. The golf bag cart works great...At least mine did. I just used tie downs to strap the deer to it and haul it out. Again, don't worry about leaves and stuff.

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>4.) My vehicle is a Firebird. How do I get him home? Do I cut him up and stick him in a cooler? Or do I need to find a buddy with a truck? And yes, I'm pricing out a jeep to purchase asap.<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' size=2 id=quote>

What year firebird? I had an 81. Man, I miss that car. <img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle> You just might fit one in that trunk. Possibly would need to leave the hatch open. The average deer isn't really all that huge per se. To be safe though, you might want to borrow a truck or get that Jeep.

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>5.) How do I get him butchered? I don't have a walk-in cooler or anything even close. Where would I go to have someone do this? How much would it cost?<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face='Verdana, Arial, Helvetica' size=2 id=quote>

I butcher mine right in my garage. All I use is a simple fillet knife. Better knives would be helpful but they're not necessary. Get a game gambrel (those hooks that look like clothes hangers) to hang the deer from. Cost about $15. They make it easy to hoist the deer up and access for skinning/butchering. I think the skinning is the most tedious part. It just never wants to come off real easy. You need to work it with a knife as you go. I try to get mine into the freezer asap. Especially in warm weather. You have a little more leeway in cold weather so you can take your time. Here is a good website for butchering game: http://www.huntinfo.com/fields1.htm If you want to take it to somebody, just look through the yellow pages or ask some of the patrons of a local hunting store where they take theirs. I haven't had anybody else butcher mine in a long time but when I did, I think it cost about $50.

Good luck

-Mike
