I don't display anything.I'll take it and show a few hunting buddies but that's about it.You have 3 kinds of people:hunters, anti's and fence-sitters who can go either way ...

I'm with this all the way. I'm not ashamed about the animals I kill to eat and will be glad to have a good conversation with anyone who wishes to discuss it. (and the unreasonable people tip their hand quickly generally, and I just don't argue with them). But I feel much more comfortable being discrete about the whole thing. I'm not a big antler guy to begin with and think "displaying" dead animals with some sort of pride is first of all silly (just MY opinion, not dictating to you), but worse can be unproductive or downright negative to hunting. Don't get me wrong - I really enjoy looking at specimins (how do you spell that word?) of large antlers and will take the opportunity to talk to a guy about an animal, large or small that he killed, and congratulate him on getting his venison, but I'm a hunter. I understand that others don't like to see dead animals flaunted for whatever personal reasons they have. Hey, just as I personally don't like to look at all sorts of wierdness that people have the right to do, but don't really need to excessively flaunt with pride in public. I'm especially aware of conservation minded people who'd rather look at animals than kill and eat them. With those folks, given the opportunity, I talk management and the lack of wild predators to keep wild whitetail pops. in check, how tastey and healthy the meat is, and how I too like to watch rather than shoot 99.9 percent of the time, etc.

RE: Should we display our dead Deer?
In an ideal world it would be great to be able to strap your deer and show it off at least a little bit, but with they way things are I feel we have to swallow our pride a little and be tasteful. I'm not saying sneak around nad hide, butuse a little tact.
I have a truck so pretty much you can't see anything. However if we are skinning one in my parents garage with the door open and someone walks by that's a different story, I refuse to shut the door cause it can get stuffy in there.
Some things are true whether you believe them or not.

121553 and IndyHunter, I'm with you 100%!!!!
While I normally don't give a hoot about being politically correct or what the anti's in general think, I do believe in discretion!
The days of parading dead deer around town in plain sight are over!
(besides it isn't good for the meat!)
Not only does parading dead animals infuriate the anti's, there are the 80% of the population that are non-hunters and also some of us hunters that don't care to see the parade. Don't get me wrong, I'd be glad to look at your deer, just not paraded around town!
As 121553 said, 80% are NON-hunters! They are the ones who will one day decide the fate of hunting in America!
The display of dead animals, the tacky T-shirts and trash talk around them can only serve to make ALL hunters look bad, and push them over to the anti's side!
Think about the kids too! (Yeah, I know they need to learn the reality of death, just not from tacky hunting displays!)
Just think, when little Junior or Janey starts bawling at the sight of your display, Who's side do you think NON_-HUNTING mommy and daddy will be on, ours or the anti's?
We should remember that we ARE ambassadors of the sport of hunting! Even poachers are linked to us real hunters. Non-unters may not know the difference, and the anti's wouldn't want them to know the difference, so we need to police ourselves. What will others think of hunting when they see or hear you?

Well yeah, and besides a deer hanging out of your truck or car just loses its dignity. It looks much more impressive displayed properly. I think even a few antis would come to understand the hunt if they could see it done with respect. Hunting is very noble, much moreso than buying meat at the local "Food-O-Rama" (not that that is bad). I think as hunters, our attitudes should reflect the respect we have for the sport and for the game we try to take.
It would be very hard for antis to shut down hunters who have built a reputation as respectful, nature loving, conservation-minded, law-abiding respectors of game. It's easy to shut down "deer-killing yahoos."

To hide it, means you did or fell like you did something wrong. Now don't get me wrong here, if you drive a truck with a topper, I don't mean throw it on the roof...sensiblity is required. Many small towns here, you drive by the coffee shop or bar and see whats been taken. City a little different, but you still see the SUV's with game hauler in the hitch or deer on the roof...I am sure they get some looks, but who cares. I have a truck and don't drop the tailgate to show off, I just take her home and then get on the yacker to all my buds to come see whats hanging in the garage!
When bear, moose or elk and the truck is loaded with gear, atv. etc, we always put the rack or rugs on the bikes...so I guess we show off a little...but it is more we have no room to place it elsewhere.

Awesome post Indy, Pretty much covers how I feel.
I think we should simply have some sense of decency over the whole thing. For example, last year I was driving home from a hunt and saw 4 deer carcasses hanging by the neck in the front lawn of some guys house. It was in a very residential area. It simply looked bad!! For crying out loud, at least hang em in the back yard or the garage. And in my opinion, hanging a deer by the neck looks very very bad and dare I say gross! I think it's way easier and looks much more humane just to hang them from the back legs.
There's nothing wrong with us having pride for our harvests but lets at least have some respect for the animal and our neighbors who probably don't want to see it. Hanging em boastfully by the necks from a tree, looking like the gallows pole doesn't make anybody think your some great hunter...even fellow hunters.
The same thing (at least for me) holds true when taking photo's. I try to take em with as much dignity as possible...hiding the gutting holes, pushing tongues back in, "posing" the deer in a decent manner, etc.

RE: Should we display our dead Deer?
Unfortunately it doesn't matter what we think on this issue. Anti's will use something like this to fuel their propaganda to try and take away our right to hunt. We have to be mindful of everyone, not just those whose endorse hunting...and be tactful as well....and that means covering it up...the point of hunting is not to show it off to everyone anyway

RE: Should we display our dead Deer?
Personally I haul mine in the back of my old truck with the tailgate up. I am proud to be a hunter and I am proud of the sport. I am always happy to harvest an animal and if someone would like to see the animal they are quite welcome!
The exception to this would be a PETA rally in the hood! (Damn bunny huggers)!
