RE: How early to put portable stand up???
My climbing stands go in with me when I go in to hunt and come out when I am done. Hang ons I think should be put in at least a month ahead of time if you don't have to worry about them being stolen.

Put up orset up...Uncle Matt whatever is easier for you to comprehend...A climber still has to have a nice clean tree. I usually keep my climber "hooked on" at the base of the tree all season.

Maybe just a bunch of us here in Missouri are weird, I know of alot of people who own climbers due to the fact that it is easy to select another area if you arent seeing much in one area. And most of the people have their own private land, I guess a person could put out a bunch of permanent ladder stands if he wanted to.

We have put up lock-on stands the week before opening day and have shot deer when the season opens. How you get to the stand and how much scent you leave is more important than how long it has been there. Some folks say it takes time for the deer to get used to anything new in their area...this I believe to be true...however, hanging a stand 20-25 ft off the forest floor and in a not conspicuous place...should not alarm the deer. At least that is my belief based on out hunting techniques in the past.
