Tell us what confuses you. That would be easier than explaining the whole system.
The first thing is you need to decide what weapon you want to use, and what animals you want to hunt.
Do you want to be home every night, or are you planning to camp?
How much time will you have to hunt?

Pete-
I'm really up for hunting anything. I haven't done it before, so can't say what I prefer. I don't know what's easiest for beginners. I want to stick with some sort of riffle.
I love to camp, and would probably want to take off for a weekend.

You really need to find someone to go hunting with you. You should probably start with something easy like a doe the first year. Then move on to a buck, and elk when you have more experience.
Call up the DOW, and ask to talk to a hunt planner. They have all the statistics in front of them. Tell them where you live, and you're brand new. Say you were thinking of hunting for a doe, and want to know what's available for you with no points.
That will get you started. It's really hard for us to answer such a general question that you're asking. You need a plan. The hunt planner can help you. It's his job.

You might want to try some small game first. It is stress free and fun. If you get something - great! If you don't get something - you don't have to clean it!
If it is big game that calls you, doe antelope or doe deer are probably the easiest. Cow elk would be the next step.
Just try to remember that the hunt is what has meaning. Taking game is a bonus.
You are not going to hunt anything until you get your Hunter Safety card.

Hunting tips
FYI, the big game application deadline is April 7th so you'll need to get your Hunter Safety Card before you apply (assuming you are applying for big game.) For deer you'll need to apply to get a tag so if you can't get your HS card before that, you might be able to get a leftover deer tag later in the year. However, they would probably not be a great area (which is why they are leftover tags). For elk you can buy bull tags over the counter for the 2nd and 3rd seasons. If you wanted to hunt 1st or 4th season, you'll need to apply. I'd suggest at least applying for a point as your 1st choice then applying for a unit that doesn't need points to draw. This is all assuming you can get your HS card before the application deadline. The DOW office on Broadway would be a good place for you to visit as they'd be able to direct you to units that you could draw. The statistics page on their website is a bit difficult to understand if you're not familiar with the system. As others have said, since you've not hunted before, I'd highly recommend you find others to go with. There are other forums that are more specific to Colorado that you might be able to find others to join up with. PM me if you'd like and I can make some suggestions.
