Default Hunters, what mistakes have cost you a shot at game?

Big game hunters,

Which mistakes have cost you getting your game? was it forgetting ammo, coughing, what ever it is I would like to hear what you have to say. My big mistake was thinking I chambered a round and it didn' t feed, when I saw the nice 10 pointer..I slowly pulled the trigger.....click, off went my trophy buck..so what say you..

Been hunting a lot of years-let me count the ways[]
1; Waiting in a stand along a skid road, can hear it coming slowly, but what was that sound off to my left? Just another hunter, but as I look back down my road there goes the back and butt of an elk-10 seconds later BOOM- and it was my distractions partner who shot it.[>:][X(][X(]
2; Elk running away from me,wait for him to turn for better shot-he didn' t-first saw him at 50 Yds.- next year bought semi-auto![]
3; very next year dropped elk on power lines-didn' t RUN fast enough to get my tag on it first![X(]
4 (a few years back) Partied to hardy the night before and fell asleep in the back of my (k) blazer as my nephews ran 3 bulls back and forth behind the truck![&:][]
5; let black bear go by forgetting the safety was on![&:]
6;Lets not forget-keep your weapon within arms reach while in camp!
7 If you do see some thing from campfire-SAY NOTHING-just take care of business![][>:]

How many do you want?

Gotta go with that one 8x8! they are great for keeping deer & elk out of sight . I have a special aversion To Dodge myself[:@][X(], loudest on the mountain, but ford' s [:@][:' (]not far behind-Duramax is almost tolerable.[]

I Archery Hunt and not judging distance correctly is the wort. Then slow down on the time to steady the shot. Mainly get lots and lots of practice.....

bowhunting from a tree stand for black bears, my camera man moved in tree stand just as i was drawing the arrow back the stand made a click. bear spooked. probably the biggest bear i have ever seen in the wild. 2-3 yards from the base of the tree i was in.
also in 2001 hunted colorado allowed p&y antelope and medium size elk see me draw my recurve and they spooked one at 6 yards and a few days later the elk was at 8 yds.
cut string of recurve with broadhead [X(] when deer hunting in se alaska probably 15 years ago.

things for me. and embarrasing they are

first time hunting , i didn' t pay attention to the sign language my grandfather was telling me about , i was to preoccupied thinking about shooting a nice buck instead , and when a nice buck came running upon the ridge that we hunted , he raised his rifle to shoot and couldn' t get a clear shot , so he made a hand gesture towards me and the deer while still looking at the deer and i didn' t understand what it meant and didn' t take the shot ( very , very , very stupid of me

My main mistakes are just prior to taking a shot, and they stem mainly from a lack of patience. Last stalk I was pursuing a nice 4x4 buck with bow in hand. I watched him from 500yds away, saw him go into thick cover, and my plan was to stalk close to the bushes and wait until he gets up from his afternoon nap. I got close to the thick cover, started seeing big tracks leaving the area, and thought that he had snuck out. Thoughts overwhelmed me and I began walking through the thick cover. Why? I dont know. From 10yds away, the nice 4x4, a nice forkhorn, and a spike all jump up and run into the next county. That is just one of the times I could just kick myself for not calming down and being patient. Patience is the key to success!

My main mistakes occur prior to taking a shot, and usually stem from a lack of patience. The last stalk, I was pursuing a nice 4x4 buck with bow in hand. I was watching the dandy buck 500yds away, and saw him enter some thick cover. My plan was to stalk to the cover, and wait for him to get up from his afternoon nap. Well, I get to the area and start to see big tracks leaving the area. Thoughts overwhelmed me and I decided to begin walking through the thick cover. Why? I don' t know. From just 10yds away the 4x4, a nice forkhorn, and a spike all bolt from the bushes and head into the next time zone. I guess this is just the hard way of learning to be patient.
