NR questions about lis. app.
Well,,,i see i've picked a great time to ask NR questions for hunting Mt. And if im LUCKY enough to get drawn,,,i hope that my son and i are'nt reenacting a famous scene from the movie "deliverence" (the log and hog squeelin scene)once we get thereBut here goes: 1)can someone give me a brief explanation of what preference pts. are. 2)odds of being drawn.3) are your oddsany better if in groups of 3 or more? im looking to hunt mule deer,,,(does not need to be some unreal monster) with my son,,he's gonna be 16 this fall and i feel like if were gonna get a chance to hunt out west i probably should get on it now,,,id like it to be just a father/son hunt,,,learning a new area,,scouting,,etc.. but if my odds of getting drawn are better if were in a group i can arrange that too,,,my hopes are to hunt public land,,i have friends that have hunted the area in the past and have hadgreat success! Let me just say that it will be a priveledge for me if this happens and i dont care how much it costs for the liscense,,we will probably stay in a cheap motel while there and eat at restaurants so i dont see the overall expense of such an opportunity to be that great. Thanks in advance for any help!

RE: NR questions about lis. app.
Preference points are good if you are patient. The last several years your odds of getting drawn on a deer tag only ($350 license) are about 20%. That means that if you purchased preference points you would more than likely get drawn in 3 years of applying. I appliedfor this a couple years in a row several years ago and didn't get drawn and thenquit applying.
I went ahead and applied for the deer/elk combo license at $650 because your odds of getting drawn are historically around 60% on it. I was lucky enough to apply and get drawn my first year applying for it this year. It's funny because in that other thread the guy is complaining about how expensive the NR tags are and I was willing to pay the extra $300 to have the better odds are getting drawn even though I wasn't planning on hunting elk unless somehow miraculously I got drawn for a rifle hunt in the Missouri breaks.
As far as groups, your odds are the same as a group or individually. The only tricky part with groups is that everyone needs to have the same preference points. I think that would be the way to go if you were doing a father/son type hunt.
The only other thing you might look into is there are some cheaper options and I think better drawing odds on some youth licenses. I haven't ever looked into that very closely.
I've applied for a Wyoming elk license this year so I won't be applying in Montana unless I don't get drawn in Wyoming.
Good Luck!

You do earn preference points when you don't get drawn if you pay the extra $20. You still have a chance of getting drawn though in the current year whether you have any prior preference points or not. If you are applying for the deer/elk combo license you have about a 60% chance of being drawn if the current year without any preference points. If you don't get drawn you get a preference point for next year. Then you get 2 chances of being drawn at about 60% chance so if you are a math wizard you can figure out the exact odds, but I would guess 90% plus chance of getting drawn on the second year.
