bicycles
I posted this over in deer hunting. Where I specifically want to apply this is to the north of the Morton/Mossyrock area in Gifford Pinchot NF. Or over in the Olympic NF in the Quilcene area. I had not thought of Quilcene until NASCAR said that he hunted in that general area and I remembered that I had hunted in that area once with my cousin about 10 years ago. So any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.
I am wondering if anybody uses bikes to get way back in? A couple of years ago I bought a safari sling for my rifle and planned on using my bike on logging roads and roads that are starting to be overgrown. I want to get away from the crowds. Mostly I am planning for next fall. What has been your experience? A couple of people I have talked to have been pretty positive about their experiences with bikes. I have ideas on how I want to go about doing this, but my biggest forseeable problem would be how to bring back the deer, provided of course I was successful.

personnaly i wouldnt use one, i see a lot of deer just on the walk in. plus bouncing through some of those trails at night on a bike.... hmmmmm? any chance you can add a camcorder to your bike so we can see what happens. hehehe.
as for getting the deer out, i guess that would be a differant episode.
Trust me...i work for the Gov.
We will not bring those responsible to justice, we will bring them to thier knees

I am going to try out my bike during this summers elk scouting on the non-green dot roads that are closed to motor vehicle traffic in the cooperative road management areas. Should be able to cover a lot more ground. Fun, too.
Not so sure I would try it while hunting although I am giving it a thought. Nascar88 has a good point about moving slow while walking in and seeing deer.
If you become a hard core bike-hunter, you could buy a used "baby caboose" trailer that attaches to your bike. It has wheels of its own and could probably handle the weight of a boned out deer.
Have you ever read any Pat McManus stories? He has one sidesplitter about hauling a deer home on his bicycle when he was young.

yes do it. here in north idaho there are thousands of closed roads. we ride our mtn bikes in 10 miles to get to our elk huntin spot. once there you can usually hunt alone since most people arnt willing to walk that far as far as gettin out your game once youve killed i rope 2 quarters on my bike just like you would with a horse then walk your bike it works way better then a packboard good luck

Cabela's has a few accessories for Mountain bikes including a gun rack that mounts on the handle bars and I think you can even hook up a Deer dolly they sell in the catalogs too. I have used Mountain bikes to get to high mountain lakes and for Grouse hunting to keep up with my Setter! It's also a good way to escape if one encounters a Cougar or late Summer Bear! It will get you farther than any one is willing to walk in for sure!
