I have heard of only two archery bucks taken but that doesn't mean much. Fair number of deer around. If you are guided or have access to private lands you will do really well. If you rely of public and block management then it will be more difficult to find a decent buck.

If you are with a quality outfitter then your experience will be great. It looks like there are lots of bucks out there. I have photographed a couple of BIG boys along the river. I have traveld almost the Milk River Valley from Nashua to Fresno a couple of times this year and saw lots of deer.
I would consider buying a pheasant license just in case you shoot a booner early in your hunt you can the whack a few birds.

I was told that my Non-Resident outfitter sponsored tag includes pheasants. We are taking our shotguns along to hunt grouse and pheasants. I also got a pronghorn license.
The biggest concern I have after talking with many references is that I will not know when to shoot. I have practiced a broken string right off my PSE Scorpion and am ready to go. I worry that I want to have a nice long hunt but if a good 150+ rack buck comes along on day 1 I will be more concerned about prolonging the hunt rather than bagging a real trophy. I understand that we are hunting along the Missouri Breaks and the Yellowstone. The references all told me stories of many many good bucks and every day the sighting of a real booner.
You can see my dilemma.
I will follow next week with a trip report.

I have hunted NE Montana and it is a hunters paradise. I saw hundreds of lopers, tons of waterfowl, had 75 pheasants get up at one time. Saw huge muleys and whitetails and coyotes around every corner, game abounds in this area. You are going to have a ball, enjoy.

If you have a speed goat tag in your pocket as a back up and birds are an option why on earth would you pass on a 150+ Whitey with a bow? Just curious not saying you are wrong but to my way of thinking it is a bird in the hand kind of thing. I would take the 150+ whitey and then try to score a decent speed goat and then worry about a few birds and if I get sick of pheasant and grouse hunting well waterfowl opens this Saturday.
But that is just me. My dilemma would be to see how I could fit all of that into a week and still want to do more.

Man I agree with Nemont, there is so much to do and enjoy this time of year in Montana. I you are intrested in a great trip the explore all that Eastern Montana has to offer, it's the expierence that counts. If it were me I would get the whitetail out of the way so I could enjoy loper hunting and great bird hunting, but then I'm no fan of whitetails.
