Default Duck Hunting Essentials

Ok, what are the essentials that every duck hunter needs. I have been hunting a lot, but have always borrowed items. I am at a point now where I can afford the things I need and have access to hunting on a regular basis. I will be hunting in the South - Mississippi & Tennessee

Thanks in advance for the replies

Welcome, we are glad to have you.

1. shotgun- 12 ga is most common
2. waders- depending on where you are hunting, these are essential
3. Heavy Camo Jacket- It gets cold out there - camo is very important in duck hunting
4. Calls- get some cheap ones until you learn how to do it right.(get an instructional cd, they help)
5. Ammo- Steel shot only!!!!!!!!!!!!!

those are the bare essentials. you can PM me if you want more info. I'm sure someone else will remember to talk about something i forgot. Have fun, Be careful, and good luck.

Thanks for the welcome, I appreciate it. We hunt in flooded timber mainly, as well as corn fields (in pits) sometimes.

As far as the gun is concerned, I have used both a 12 & 20, but I like the 12 better. From what I have read, remington sounds like the best bet, #4 shot (steel) ammo.

I know there is a difference in camo when hunting in timber/reeds/fields, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Any other info would be great..thanks again!

Shells and ducks. Those are the essentials

In all seriousness. You already have a gun.

Waders

Waterproof Camo

Calls as mentioned before

Decoys a dozen and one or two wobblers

A chessie or the other dog

Friend with a boat and blind

Permament Hall Pass from the wife/girlfriend

Snow cover up North

2's, 3's, and 4's in steel. I use Winchester Drylock or Supremes. or Hevi Shot 4's and 6's when I'm flush with cash. Normally You find me with 3's in steel.

You live just south of me. The ducks are starting to come down a little but they ain't thick yet.

Yeah the Hodgeman chest waders are really good. I hunt flooded timber also and I've never had water in em'. Jacket- All waterproof jackets are okay, they are pretty much all the same.

Some other items.
1. Facemask
2. Headlight- I like those single LED lights that clip to your hat $15 and weigh nothing.
3. Lots of warm clothing- no cotton. Fleece and wool are best bets.
4. Waterproof gloves.
5. Lanyard
6. A Lab
7. Decoy bag- If doing any hiking in backpack style bag, a lightweight chair is nice.
