Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default RE: Looking for a new gun Win or Rem 3 or 3 1/2 ?

I have never shot the Winchester, but I still have a 3" Rem. 870 "Turkey Special" and have killed a lot of turkeys with it. I started shooting a 3 1/2" Rem. 870 last year and the only disadvantage I have found is the extra weight, but I think the gun more than makes up for it in its consistency of shooting great patterns at 40yds. Yes it can kill out past that, but I think consistently shooting past 40yds will get you in trouble. Not to mention what normally apears to be 40yds where this type shot is possible normally turns out to be farther for me. I am shooting a Comp-n-Choke with 31/2" Winchester #6's. I am shooting there newer shells that are a little hotter and have a little less shot. I don't worry about the extra kick while hunting, but it can be a factor when patterning the gun. Whichever gun you choose will kill a turkey, but you have to pattern the gun and only shoot wihtin that particular gun's limits.

With all that said, I don't think you can go wrong with the 3 1/2" 870.

I wouldent worry about the recoil as long as your shootin at some sort of game animal..

I would go with the 3 1/2" remington, you can always shoot 3" inch shells in it if you want. I think the 870 is one of the best shotguns ever made.

After owning a 3 1/2" gun, I now prefer a 3" turkey gun. At the distances that you will encounter in the turkey woods, a 3" shell is more than enough to get the job done, and without the "Mule Kick" to your shoulder!!! Been there, done that!! I also prefer the Winchester 1300 over the 870.

I've shot a 3.5 since I was 15 and have never had a problem with it.Although both shells get the job done after owning my 3.5 and taking not only turkeys but ducks and geese with it for years,it would be difficult to change.I dont have one bit of a problem with recoil that everyone seems to whine about.I dont shoot a 3.5 12gauge I shoot a 10ga Ithica to be exact and because the gun is heavy and its an automatic most of the recoil is absorbed there at the shot.My wife can shoot it without a problem. If you want to shoot a 3.5 comfortably than buy a bigger gun, a 10 auto to be exact and you'll be fine.

ive been shooting a rem 870 3 1/2" since i was 13 I really like it and the kick isnt bad either...patterning it you dont want to shoot a whole box of shells but in the woods you dont even notice the kick just like any other gun. the weight is similar if not the same as a 870 3". Im shooting winchesters newest shells in # 5 shot. I really like it for waterfowl too. like other people have mentioned you can always shoot 3" or 2 3/4" shells out of it too. REM 870 is the way to go
