I see we all use different ways to work birds, its interesting to hear/read how hunters work the birds, over the way your self does. But I have to say most are close...BT

I would'nt call to much from 11:30 to 1:00pm, turkeys don't to much at this time. Yet this is a good time to catch a Tom alone. If you are walking call about every 70 yards or so. Mix your calls up. Use a mouth call on the first stop, a slate on the second stop, a box call on the 3rd. This has worked for me on several occasions. Each gobbler has a certain hen call that fires him up. Here is what happened to me 4 years ago:

I was walking calling on a ridgeline in Missouri around 11am, hunting ends there at 1 as well. I walked about 500 yards stopping about every 100 yards to call. I used a mouth call at each stop. I sat down and hunted the end of the ridgeline for 45 minutes to no avail. I did'nt hear 1 gobble. I started back down the ridgeline to head home and decided I was going to mix up my calls at each 100 yard stop. First stop used mouth call....nothing. Second stop walked another 100 yards used box call... nothing. Third stop used a slate call........nothing. Third stop waled another 100 yards used aluminum friction call........Bam! turkey gobbles 50 yards just over the ridgetop to my left!. I set up right there and threw my mouth call end, got my mask on and gun up. I called with the mouth call......nothing. I could here the Tom strutting but I could not see him. I hit him again but this time with the aluminum call.....Bam! he double gobbled! He came straight in shot him at 20 yards. My point is use all your calls, you never know which one is going to fire the bird up! If I had'nt used the aluminium call I would have walked right by that bird and gone home empty handed. Yeah it can be a pain changing calls all the time but hey in my opinion it is worth it!
