RE: Why do turkeys answer to locator calls.
Turkeys in the Spring do a lot of what most hunters call "shock gobbling." Gobblers often gobble at loud noises or anything that makes them excited or mad. A lot of times if you shoot a turkey or hear a gun go off...you will hear other gobblers answer to the gun going off. The same is true for owls, crows, and coyotes. Turkeys don't like any of the three and will shock gobble at any of them. Crow calls work good anytime of day and especially in the morning and owl and coyotes are great for locating on the roost.

Spring gobblers will shock gobble at just about anything, a truck door closing, a chain rattling when a ranch gate is closed, yelling "hey" loudly, why just last week I was watching about 80 birds in a flock after fly down standing in a field, when I started my Ford power stroke to leave the air filled with about 20 gobblers sounding off, it was neat.

Testosterone Levels in a Gobbler become higher in the spring with the increasing of day light Hours. This is the indication to the Gobbler that mating season is starting. As levels climb different noises catch the attetion of the bird, because he is on edge more often, to respond to noises such as hens. With the habit to create a pecking order, and the knowledge of other Gobblers in anyone area, He will respond as fast to a Hen noise as he can this is the role of Dominates. As the season progresses and the day light hours start to change again, gobbling activity starts to change aswell. The winter months the Light hours are the shortest and this is the time when most do not hear birds gobble that often...BT
