Default Youth Shotgun - .870 or 1100 ??????

My 10 year old is ready to start shooting & I am going to get him a 20 gauge but
not sure weather to get him an automatic or an .870. Either way I want it to be a 3"
so he can turkey hunt with it too. Any advice?

I'm not totally sure(actually about 90% sure)the 1100 guns currently out there are 2 3/4" only. Unless you've found one of the older guns that came in 3". The 870 youth is a good option. My daughter shoots it and get excellent results(15 hits in skull and spine at 35 yards) with a hastings ext. turkey choke(.566) and federal 3" #6 shot.

One thing to consider ( I teach Hunter Education)

A 1100 - 20 Ga. will have less kick that a 870 Pump.

One of my first guns was an 1100 youth 20ga. Got it as a 10th birthday present. I remember it like it wasn't 23 years ago. Yes, it shot 2 3/4 inch shells I think the new ones do as well. Sweet little gun, it would make any 10 year old smile from ear to ear. The auto had almost no kick, shot straight, and dad would only let me put one shell in the chamber. Used it on trap and skeet to start, then squirrels, ducks, geese, grouse and even shot a few slugs through it, but never got a deer. As for turkey? Any 20 ga. will kill a turkey, maybe not at 50 yds. but get 'em in closer than 35 and you should have a dead bird. At the time we didn't have turkeys around.
I would highly recommend this gun. Now that I have a boy I wish I hadn't sold mine. I'll be looking for a one in the future. Happy hunting

i just bought an 11-87 and love it. it is a 12 guage though, but they make one in 20. i would go with it because it can shoot 2 3/4 and 3. if you step up one more to the magnum, but that's only in 12 guage, you can even shoot 3 1/2! if not this gun though, i would go for the 1100, the 870 does have more kick...

As far as I know, the 1100 still is limited to a 2 3/4" shell. BUT, my wife shot her first turkey last spring with hers (inherited from the kids), shooting a #6 max dram equivalent 2 3/4" 20 gauge shell. 1 shot, dead turkey. 15-20 yards, though.

If you plan to get a youth gun, plan to trade/sell it in a few years, at a loss, when your son finishes growing. I would also look at a short barreled (26 inch or shorter) 12 gauge autoloader with a resized stock and special recoil pad, too. More versatile, will have longer usefulness to your kid, and the recoil can be addressed/reduced with the type of action, strength of shell and the recoil pad. Later you can put the full sized stock back on.

I bought my 12 year old the 870 youth 20 gauge last year and if I had it to do over, I would get an auto 20 gauge. It might not be a Remington but a 3" auto of some kind. The reason would be, less recoil. He can handle it but I feel he would enjoy hunting much more without the recoil. It REALLY shows up with 3" turkey loads. I am thinking about selling the 870 and getting the auto, as him enjoying the sport, is what it's all about. Don

I was looking on Remington's website, and seen the 1100 comes in 3" chamber. Just thought I'd let you know.

You can get the youth 20 ga 1100 in the 3" Here is the link
http://www.remington.com/firearms/yo...y_yth_camo.htm
They would both be great guns. The auto would definetly have less kick. The pump is probably a little safer but if you're with him to teach him safety that wont be a problem. If spending the extra money isn't that much of a problem for you I would get the 1100.
