bowhunters

RE: bowhunters
This will be my 5th year chasing turkeys with a bow. It's
not for everyone, but for me...I love it[:-].
...a lot! My chances are much higher when hunting from
one of my DB blinds, however, much of the time it is
difficult to draw the birds close enough for a shot. I
definitely enjoy hunting outside my blind much
more, but man is it tough getting drawn. I wear face paint
and a ghillie suit. Last year on one particular day I had
four gobblers come in, all alone and at different times of
the day. Each one worked inside 25 yards and I wasn't
able to get drawn on any of them...such is hunting
turkeys with a bow.
I have shot over them, under them, taken feathers, had my
arrow deflected by trees, and actually had two gobblers fly
off with my arrow in them. I have been fortunate to take
some nice gobblers with my bow and definitely worked
to get them.
One thing you can write on the inside of your bow...PATIENCE,
because it WILL be tested[>:].

how much different is it than gun hunting?

RE: bowhunters
I'm gonna give it a whirl this year with my bow too. I have done the fall hunt before with a bow, but not the spring. I know it is fun during the fall, and if it is half as fun during the spring, it us well worth it. I am having a hard time finding a broadhead that is really effective on turkeys though. Does anybody have any pointers? Good Luck. BB

Well...I'm going with my new gun this year but last year I hunted with my bow and my dad always hunts with his bow. It is alot of fun and is much different from gun hunting. I would highly recommend using a blind. I had one last year and never had a problem drawing back on turkeys. Have fun and good luck!

RE: bowhunters
You may love it, I think it depends on the person!
You can hunt w/o a blind, but it is tough to draw @ 20 yards or less. Unless your a better shot than most. To shoot a moving target the size of your fist takes PRACTICE!
A good blind is the best! there are some good choices out now.
Double Bull Archery makes mine T-5 w/blackout interior & zipp/out roof.
The new Cabelas version for 150.00 bucks vs 400.00 for a double bull.
Double bull makes an import for 50/75 less & a T-2 for around 250.00
I have hunted w/arrows only since 1979 & started turkey hunting in 1996 after a friend took me as a caller the year before.
I have tried every possiable blind you can think of. I built my own from cheap dome tents, then painted them camo. The wind will blow the less expensive blinds all over, the movment & the noise makes the birds nervous... A double bull placed in the middle of a field or top of any ridge will hold; still, quiet, dry! When staked down @ the corners & guy ropes tyed down they will withstand 40 + mph winds
They are also expensive, that's their biggest downfall! A sporting goods shop in my area rents them for 40 bucks a week.
I go loaded for BEAR, everything but the kitchen. 12 hours in a 6 foot circle needs comfort! Food, water, ect. Then you are not portable, but you find a good location and set up for the day.
I have a spot that has everything; field, swamp, pines, oak ridges, and a corn field all within 400 yards of each other. It's on public land so I have to make sure no one helps themselves to my equipment.

RE: bowhunters
Archery for turkeys...? thats insane but i am in for sure. Actually as much as it sounds crazy it is one of the most challenging hunts there isi truly love it and no matter how frustrating it gets i will keep doing it till i get better at it. BB asked about broadheads i think that the expandable are the ticket i use 100gr nap the bigger the cut diameter the better look at the vortex if ya got the money. good luck to all.

RE: bowhunters
I use 100 grn. 3 blade NAP Spitfires........they seem to stop those turkeys with no problem.Trevor above uses them as well, the results speak for themselves!!!!!
We both recomend and use a Stealth Bowholder .......a very nice addition to bowhunting from a blind, whether your hunting deer, turkeys or antelope this bowholder is a must when hunting from the ground!
