RE: What is the best call
The one that brings the bird in!!!
I have killed birds with mouth, box, and slate but about 4 years ago my hunting partner's brother let me borrow his call claiming "This will bring em' in". It was a Super Crystal call from M.A.D. Calls. It was the first slate type that I'd used so I practiced briefly that evening. The next morning I went out and called up a 23 pounder who said hello to my Remington. Then I went and bought one of my own that week and went back to MN and dropped another one. It's not the "BEST" call but I've found thru experimentation that I can imitate a hen really good with it and piss her off in the process. I get out in the spring to a park reserve where hunting isn't allowed and do alot of hunting with just my call and a camera. I rough the call up and the striker with gritty sandpaper to get the sound I want. I don't mind not having hands free as I can lay it on the ground and reach down with one hand for some soft clucks. If the bird has committed they will usually show up sooner or later. Works for me...
