Best way to pack-out Big Tom from the woods?
The area that I have been hunting lately is a good mile and a half to two miles from the truck. I helped carry out a tom a couple of years ago. I still remember how hard it was to pack him that far over your shoulder. Is there any product or ideas out there to help with the packing?

the elite turkey vest i have has a game bag in the back i carried one out about a mile last spring and it wasn't bad at all it was a pretty good sized bird and it hung out both sides you have to take the vest off to get it in there but it worked very well. The weight was on my back and my hands were free it also has an orange "flag" that you can pull out so some nut doesn't see the bird and blast you

Several years ago, I was in a backpacking store getting ready for a hike through the Smokie Mountains. I found a very compact and lightweight knapsak that folded up and stuffed into its own pocket. The whole thing compacts down to less than the size of your wallet. I bought one in blaze orange and keep it in my pack for those times when I'm a long way from the truck. For the shorter walks, I also keep a loop of rawhide bootlace about 6 or 8 inches long that is passed through a hole drilled through a 3/4 inch wooden dowell that is about 3 or 4 inches long. I wrap the loop around both feet together and pass the dowell through the loop. Grab the dowell and let the rawhide pass between the middle and ring fingers (like you would grab the pull rope on a lawn mower)and hoist that bird over your shoulder. This gives you a handle to hold onto in a much more comfortable position than holding onto the legs. Some people make these out of deer antlers and give them as gifts. Hope you have occaision to try out each of these ideas.

I use an old piece of a 1 inch lead rope about 2 ft long. I carry it in my vest and tie it around the legs so I can put the rope over my shoulder or put my arm through the rope between the legs with the rope over my shoulder and carry the thing out. Of coursean orange sreamer tied to the bird is a good idea so you dont get corked by another hunter.

I use a blaze orange carrying bag made by H.S Strut just for that purpose. It has 2 shoulder straps, and after you have your bird inside, you carry it on your back just like a backpack.

You can carry all kinds of extra stuff. But you need a turkey vest anyway and most of the good ones have a game bag on the backs of them. With wide straps on the good ones it's a lot easier going in the bag than wearing a vest then putting something else on top of that.
Legs over the shoulder? That's gotta hurt. Oh!.....the TURKEY'S legs. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
