Turkey Hunting Whether it's spring or fall doesn't matter to this bunch. Great tips on calling, bustin flocks, using blinds and more.

Default How' s this pattern?

Went to pattern my Charles Daly auto 3.5" with .650 Hastings yesterday and here is what I got.

At 40 yards using a Win. HV 3.5" #6, I punched:
172 hits on a 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper
34 head and neck hits
11 " vital" hits

At 30 Yards, same choke and shell:
262 hits on 8.5 x 11
65 head and neck hits
35 " vital" hits

At 20 Yards, same choke and shell:
Hole in head size of half dollar, impossible to count

I tried out my Star Dot .668 from last year and it patterned poorly with #4s, 5s and 6s in Win. HV 3.5" , so I moved onto the borrowed Hastings. I probably could go on spending alot of money on chokes and shells, but I am just going to order the Hastings .650 and stick with Win. HV 3.5" #6s.

Well from the sound of it you have got a pretty good pattern. How did you measure your yardage?

Yardage was paced off. I wanted to take a tape out, but the ground was extremely wet and muddy so I didn' t want to get the tape all muddied up. After stepping off 40 yards and seeing how far it is to the target, I don' t think I will shoot that far anyway. 40 yards is a LONG way off and the limit of what I would feel comfortable, especially shooting #6s.

Sounds good to me. From my experience, most tuned turkey guns average from 5 to 12 in the kill zone at 40 yards. I put in about 7 #4' s at this distance. I usually get the birds in within 30 yards or so but its good to know I can reach out to 40 if i need to. Stick with what you got. Sounds like a pretty hot combo.
