870 Express Super Magnum
Would you take this gun over an mossberg 835 for a turkey gun. I want to possibly use the gun for some other types of hunting. I am begging to believe that you can't really have a bad turkey gun. Eventually you will get a good pattern. The 835 is camo though. If you have this gun how are the patterns out of if?

RE: 870 Express Super Magnum
I have the 835 (24" barrel)and I really love it for turkey hunting I have it for 12 years, never a problem, with the factory turkey choke I'm using 3.5"Winchester Surprems HV #5 and getting really good patterns, but there is always room for improvement, so looks like I will be getting a Indian Creek turkey choke and using 3.5"HeviShot 13 2-1/4 #5
My friend has the 870 fully camo (26" barrel), he paid $365 at Gander Mountain, he put in a Remingtion brand turkey choke (super full) using the same Winchester Ammo as me, he killed a bird at 50 yards last week. His gun is heavier then mine, he likes the camo on the Mossberg better. If it wasn't for the feel he would of gotten the Mossberg, the Remington just felt better.
If I was going to purchase another turkey only shotgun in a pump I might go with the 870 just because I have a 835. But remember the 835 is overbored, like having a bull barrel so to speak, the 835 was the first true 3.5" chamber. You need to compare them side by side, see what you like better, what feels better. Either one you choose is a WIN!!!! Best of luck

RE: 870 Express Super Magnum
You already got good advice. I have an older 870 that is full camo and a 20" barrel. I like it alot. But I have never shot it at a bird. It patterns nice though. Now if I can just get a bird to cooperate. LOL
Seriously, I realy like the 870. My deer gun is an 870 and is the most acurate slug gun I have seen. 125-150 is not out of the question and even beyond that too. But the mossberg is a great gun too.
Just get what feels the best in hand and go from there. As for the camo...I like camo but many turkey have died in front of a non-camoed gun.
If I were looking though I would serously consider a thumbhole stock or pistolgrip. Those feel NICE.

RE: 870 Express Super Magnum
Both are pumps. I had the slug barrel for my 835, I sold it. It was accurate, but with any 3.5" chamber shotgun if you use slugs make sure to use 3" or 3.5" shells not 2-3/4"
Both the 835 and 870 are made with the tactical type stock, or you can purchase these stocks or either the thumbhole or pistol grips as a aftermarket item. Your line of sight will be different somewhat using any of these stocks versus the standard stock, and some like them and some don't

I personally thing the 870 is a much better gun, the mossbergs are popular on here but i have never liked the feel of them. They have sold millions and millions of 870s for a reason

Well, i think it is going to come down to a holding decision. Mossberg i get camo with overbored barrel. Remington i get well a remington for one and a very reliable gun all around. I have made a conclusion that there is no "bad" turkey gun. Eventually you will find the right choke and shell combo that gives you and awesome pattern.

Strutter your 100% correct either one is a Winner. The barrel on my 835 is much wider (overbored) then my friends 870, but they both kill as good as each other. The correct shotgun for you is what you like better. When I purchased my 835 many years ago, I wanted a combo deer/turkey shotgun, the 835 was one if not the only one that did this, I came to like it
