My son's first gobbler yesterday in Tennessee (Pic)
Yesterday, March 22, 2008, was a very special day as my 12 year old boy killed his first turkey on the opening day of the Tennessee youth hunt.
I started turkey hunting in 1980 with few turkeys in this state and fewer hunters. After 27 seasons I am thankful to have taken many birds and have so many rich memories of spring turkey hunting in this and other states. I can say without a doubt, however, that yesterday was the highlight of my turkey hunting "career".
.
This is the third season that my son has been behind the gun (prior to that he tagged along with me many times). Before yesterday he's had several opportunities to take a bird but either missed or couldn't get off a shot. I could tell that it was eating at him and he was wondering aloud if he would ever kill one. It finally all came together at high-noon yesterday after I struck a gobbling bird on the adjacent property and got him to cross a fence(luckily a tree had fallen across the fence and he hopped up on the trunk, gobbled, and walked across to our side) and come to 25-30 yards strutting and gobbling. It was a greatshow and when I clucked to get him to stand up out of the strut Peter absolutely hammered him witha Nitro 4X5X7 load from his 20 gauge. I was so excited that I accidently pulled a bunch of tail feathers out trying to get my foot on his head as he was flopping around. Stupid me - you would think I hadnever seen a flopping turkey before. The turkey was KOed but I was so determined to get my foot on his head since he was Peter's first bird that I really made a mess of the tailfeathers. Fortulately my son didn't care.
As we always do with deer and turkeys weknelt down and thanked God for the bird, the experience, and the opportunity to do it together. Petergave thanksto theLordforsending this turkey and for causing that tree to fall across thefence so he could cross it.Isure hope theGood Lord has a sense of humor.
The turkey was a heavy 2 year-old, 22lbs, 8" beard, 7/8" spur.
What a day. I ama very blessed and fortunateman to be able tohunt with my boy and sharean experiencelike this with him.
