These birds are hard to hunt. In my opinion, you gotta be proud to harvest any bird. To date, I've gotten one. I hunted that bird hard, by myself, and loved every minute of it. 18lbs, 10" beard, 15/16" spurs (every little bit counts). Successfully getting the turkey I was after makes him a trophy in my eyes. That said, I sure wouldn't mind 1.5" hooks on my next one!

RE: What Qualifies as a Trophy Tom?
I suppose that depends on where you are in your turkey hunting career.
For a first year hunter, it would be the first turkey you get, of any sex, by any means.
Thenit progress something like this.
First bird with a beard, by any means.
First tom, by any means.
First tom with a 6 inch beard, by any means.
First tom with a 9+ inch beard, by any means.
Then it would go on to first bird with a bow, first double beard, first record book bird, etc.
For your first time, I suggest you look, listen and learn, and enjoy as much as possible. Learing is key. If you get a bird great, if you get a tom really great, if you get a tom with a 9+ beard fantastic.
If I can help you in any way, feel free to let me know, you can contact me at [email protected].

Mr. Longbeard,
I got the bird in MD. It was my last semester of undergrad and I had plenty of time to hunt. I loved it. This year the goal is to get birds in both states. We'll see how it works out.
