Default Whats your thoughts?

Watched a show the otherday that Ray Eye was the main character of as they were huntin spring gobblers.During the course of the show Ray was discussing different types of turkey calls(friction, mouth)and stated that he felt the most important part of turkey huntin was calling.Do you agree??Mind you Ray is a world champion caller, guide, writer, speaker, and all that other stuff and obviously practices what he preach's but in my humble opinion calling is part of turkey hunting, setting up in the right position is everything to me!Whats your thoughts?

Bob,I'm with you.Callin is a very important part. Not only the quality of your callin but also knowin what sounds to make at the right time.Setup is also just as important along with a few other factors. To be succesful on a regular basis all these factors gotta go hand in hand.

I agree, they all work hand in hand, although like Ray Eye, I tend to place a little more towards calling ability as well. Ray eye is one of my idols, that guy just "KNOWS" turkeys, plain and simple. I've read many of his articles in all the various magazines and watched many of his video's, and he has taken many "myths" right off the charts!! So as you can see, I agree with Ray on most of his thoughts and ideas as well.

I know two guys that just started turkey hunting last spring and they know NOTHING about calling and they both rolled boss gobblers last spring. They hunt a farm that get no hunting pressure. So that kinda blows the calling theory out of the water for me...

I think if you are hunting in a area that has a lot of turkeys and they don't get hunted hard you could call one in with a plain ol push pull call!!!!

On the other hand if you are hunting heavily pressured birds then thing are a lot different. I think your calling skills come into play more and you better know the land your hunting and the birds your hunting. IN OTHER WORDS YOU HAVE TO BE A REAL TURKEY HUNTER!!!!

Knowing how to Setup is very important in this test of skill. But in another part Calling ,knowing, how, when, how well, what call and at what time can be important to the test aswell. When I hunt some states that I have never been , this puts me in an area that I have no idea where too setup , so I'm going to have to use more Calling and woodsmanship to become sucessfull.I think calling plays a somewhat good roll in the sport , at times...BT

I have to agree with Mr. Longbeard, there's more factors that come into play than setting up and calling.......Pressure is a key factor....time frame, by this I mean how many hens are bred and how many are still hanging around the Gobbler....good calling is important, but I still say that set up is the key....if you are where that gobbler would like to be, or has been in the past(strutting area) then half the battle is won.....

In our line of work, we must be able to play Dixie and the Battle Hym of the Republic, With Equal Enthusiasm.

Plain and simple: YOU HAVE TO BE IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME. CALL OR NO CALL.

well guys, I agree callin is important. but to be honest, i think
it's the least important tool of being succesful as a turkey hunter.
I think knowin your terrain, knowin where to set up, and a whole
lot of patients is more important than callin. as long as you can make a decent yelp and cluck, with the right rythem(sp) you can call up turkeys.
I busted up flocks in the fall while deer huntin, and listen while they gather back up. I swear, I've heard some that sounded more like a dog caught in a steel trap. I have an uncle in Missouri, that sounds like a squeeler duck when usin his box call. but he calls up turkeys. I guess what I'm tryin to say is, you don't have to sound exactly like a turkey, to call em in. but, I agree it helps to know the different calls, and when to use them. especially when your huntin on public land.
