Here in WA, I guess it depends on which subspecies you are chasin'. I think a slate (and little of it) works well for the easterns here on the west side of the state - they don't tend to be very vocal and you can get a great purr off a slate. But the merriams in the east, the just LOVE, and I mean LOVE a box call. Strange thing is, I don't think the pitch matters much to them. I don't know why, but that box call really gets em' time and time again. Don't know much about the rio's in the central part of the state. I see em' deer hunting in the fall, but haven't hunted them at all (not ruling anything out in the future - just haven't got around to it yet ) I keep meaning to bring some calls when I'm chasin' the deer, just to see what'll stir em' up, but somehow, I forget every year until I pull into camp.

i bring a few varities in my vest each spring and experiment with what the birds will like to hear. I find having that variety is essential if your hunting a certian area for some time. Every bird has their own "sweet tune" he will respond back to and just having different calls will greatly put the ball in your court and greater your chances at harvesting a bird.
But remebering to not overdo it in calling is another key.....trial and error has taught me lol

i like to use a friction call...right now i only have 2...a cody glass call that still needs broken in and the right stricker which im working on the right wood for it now...and a knight and hale ol yeller with a frictionite surface...that thing sounds sweet with most strickers..even some of the first ones i made..i used it to call in the first turkeys i ever called in my self and when me and dad call together they always come my way first! i have a box call made by putts and it sounds pretty good...i dont like how using it except to locate birds that arent pressured at all because once in a while it throws out a squeek and i dont want to loose a bird over it...i think if i make the perfect strikers for my frictions i will have some sweet sounding calls...speaking of that im going to put the deer gear away and bust out the turkey vest and start practicing for srping in about 5 months! i cant wait!

Hey mauser good to see you bud long time no see. Yeah finding a striker that will sound good is important. BT is making me one out of apple wood so i can't wait to give her a try on my sla-tek.
Them acrylic strikers i find don't grip into the surface very well that come with a few on the market.

Wow BT you're really on aposting tear!
My favorite call is without a doubt a sweet, custom friction call. I prefer slate, but I also use glass. By carrying 2 calls and 4-5 different strikers I can sound like a whole harem of hot hens ready for tending! Here in PA, we hunt alot of public ground and needless to say there are some idiot roaming the same woods as us. Without going into to detail lets just say the birds hear alot of calling before and during open season. I like to use a mouth call as much as anyone, but I also like to use an off-beat call, like a tube call.

I got good responses from a Quaker Boy mouth call last season, but it was also the first season I used any mouth call. (three within sight, but only one in range) The season before that it was a custom crystal that lured two within sight; my buddy got one. Not as much experience behind my answer as some of the guys here, but it's just my $.02
