raven..good to see you too i havent been aroudn the turkey forum lately...glad to hear apple works...i have 2 apple logs drying in the rafters of my gramas shed!! i can probally pull 4 strickers out of them i cant remember how bug they were....i am pulling them down and spliting them soon and throwing them back up to dry better..i didnt have time the day i cut them and weahter got cold and wet/snowy after that..it warmed a bit and i can go outside and not freeze...i agree the acrylic strikers do slide alot and harder to use consistantly...my dad uses one on a glass call!! i dont know how he does it but it sounds pretty decint..really nice low pitched yelps and nice purrs..i tried using the call and striker and it sounds like crap for me...i guess because thats all he uses and wont use anything else he learned it well...i cant wait to make some apple strickers! i was just experimenting with it i didnt even know if it would work..glad to hear someone else uses it...its so hard without a lathe!!!!!

Mauser,
I find soft woods to work great on a friction call. Must be the composition of the wood that it allows it to grip into the surface and create a nice pitch sound to the gobblers. I guess if you stick to one striker you will get the hang of it like your dad has done with that striker you mentioned.
in my opinion i dunno if this is right i tend to belive that soft wood strikers give more volume and clairty to the calls. Hardwood strikers i find let you get more bite out of the sounds like a fighting purr and cackles but both woods will produce different sounds on how you hold the striker and what kind of friction call you use.

BT, like you, I prefer a mouth call, but I also use friction calls that I also enjoy using just as much. Slate, Glass, Aluminum, and Sla-Tek type call surfaces work well. When first starting the game I use one of these friction calls, then as the bird works in closer, I then switch to a mouth call which allows both hands to be on your gun and at the very same time allows you to call while your face is up against the stock. The mouth call is by far the most deadly turkey call on the market today bar none, because of these reasons listed here. While I do carry a box call with me, it's these other calls that see most of the duty!!<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

I found out over the years that turkey hunters and guitar players have the same mentality...THEY WON'T TELL YOU OR SHOW YOU NOTHING!!!.....I love this place.....LOL....I like to use a variety of mouth calls and a slate call.

Use a mouth call most of the time. If it is real windy I will try a box or a glass call. I just feel more confident using a mouth call. Less movement to spook a silent gobbler that might sneek in.
