I've shot them at 15 yards(to close) I've shot them at 45 yards(to far) I think 20 to 30 yards is my comfort zone

I have shot turkeys from 6 (too close) to 57 (too far) steps. My favorite distance is 20-30 yards. You can let them get too close, which increases the chance of them seeing you.

My Average for all the birds harvested is 21 paces from where I sat.

Call em up close and personal!

I've killed em from inside of 10yds too "hail marrys" over 70yds. But my average shot is in the 25-40yd range. But with my Nitro/Rhino equipped guns I wont hesitate to pull the trigger (if the bird is in the clear) at 65 yds. But I have patterned my gun and know EXACTLY where that shot is going in relation too my red dots at those ranges. For most guns shooting lead with typical chokes and just a bead sight I say keep it inside 45yds!

Good luck,
RA

ps
I always carry my Leica LRF 800 so when I speak of distance I mean too the foot.

patterns dont lie...thats a good way to tell....but even with a GREAT pattern i wouldnt shot much passed 45yds or so....them little pellets just loose the little energy they have prettttty dang quick....no sense in risking a shot...getting them close is the name of the game...though both spring birds ive taken i knew i could kill them and didnt wait.....my first i can honestly say i would have missed if he didnt walk into my pattern....only 25yds away...but i was PUMPED and got excited...pulled the trigger and pulled the gun to the left...i remember the bead being WAY off of him...thank goodness he was walking to the left!! right into the swarm of #4s...the second bird flew out of the roost at 30-35 maybe 40yds...him and his buddies...i could see the beard on him....put the bead on him and he was down for the count...could have worked them..maybe picked a bigger bird...but i was happy!....

70 yards... I think the next time I go out and pattern my shot gun, I'm going to take some of my FedHeavyWeightFCW #5's and shoot them at 70 yards at a 1/4" piece of lawan and see how much penatration I get... Just curious
