I have never hunted before but am very excited about getting into it. Turkey season is coming up and I have no clue where to start. I have no equipment other than my Remington 870 Mag. No Camo. No calls. Nothing. I have no one around here to teach me either. The only info I have gotten has been online and from OLN. Please help guide me to bagging a bird. Anything informative you can tell me would be greatly appreciated. I will be hunting in East Tennessee when the season starts in April. Thanks a lot.

Landogie,This is gonna take more than one reply.I'm countin one the other members here to help out.Lot's of knowledge on this site.I'll get ya started.First thing I would suggest is locate some turkeys.It's not too early to start scoutin now.Take a Sunday afternoon and go for a ride checkin in fields.When ya spot birds ya now know they're in the area.Take another afternoon and walk this area.Get to know it,Look for sign(tracks in the mud,feathers,droppins,scratchins etc.)This is a start.I'm sure others will soon add to this.

I will only offer one piece of advice- read the archives!!!!! These questions with first time setup are posted on here all the time, and many of us respond to it over and over. It gets tiresome, not being mean or anything, just tiresome. well, i will give you another piece of advice-make a list of what you need, do, and prepare for. There is nothing worse than seeing a newbie out in the woods calling the wrong way, not being stealthy, can't conceal himself at all, and doesn't have the patience and cracks under the pressure.

I am not sure how old, or your financial state. I have had several students over the years that have started hunting, even though their families didn't. If that is the case try to find a mentor. Contact your local NWTF chapter someone there might be able to take you under their wing.
Scout and find birds. If your state requires written permision to hunt private lands get it as soon as you can. The earlier you ask the more likely you will get permission. Get a couple of calls. Push pins are easy to learn and fairly cheap. Try a mouth call and practice. The rythem of the call is the most important aspect. If you can't afford camo clothes teh use some old natural colored chino type pants and shirts. Also sight in your shotgun and know the effective range with the choke and shell you are using.

The key to killing a bird in my opinion is : #1 location, scout and know the land how the turkeys use it. #2 The ability to move quietly, sit still and blend in #3 calling

Thanks for all the help. I just started to aquire some equipment for my turkey hunt. I had a gift card to Bass Pro and just checked their clearence section online. I got a H.S. Strut Panhandler Glass call kit, a H.S. Strut "So you want to be a turkey hunter?" DVD and a Redhead Wire Frame Headnet in Realtree Hardwoods Green HD. All this for $34! Im pretty excited. I think the first thing i definately need to do per ya'lls advice is to get out there and start scouting. Thanks for the help thus far, keep it coming. I will also look through the acheives to try and find questions I have that have already been answered.

Check your local library. You may be surprised at what you find there to read on the subject. Some of it may be old material, but still good info to digest and see if it fits into your bag of tricks.
