Where I place my cameras I can drive my truck to if I want. Since it is on a working cattle ranch, the smell of the trucks dont faze the animals. I have had the camera trigger on deer 15 minutes after I pull away in my truck. I have an SD Card reader that plugs into the USB port on my laptop and I just download into iPhoto. If I had to hike to cameras I would figure out how to switch out cards. I have never formatted, they just work.
