Default This sounds crazy (arrows)

I uncased my Jeffery take down recurve a couple weeks ago and started shooting it. I was shooting XX75 Classics in 1916 size. (this is a 55# recurve)
They were shooting really well for me except for the occasional flyer which I attributed to a sloppy release. Anyway, I thought these arrows were a bit underspined for this bow so I ordered some 2115s based on info from the Easton chart. Holy crap - and I mean that litterally. That is what they flew like. Fishtailing all over the place with field tips. And forget broadheads. Oh yeah before anyone asks the did have feathers and not vanes.
I'm sticking with the 1916s. Anyone want some 2115s at 27 1/2"?

For a 55lb recurve, 2115's should work. I shoot 2018's with 52lb longbow and 53lb recurve.

But, I shoot 30" arrows. I think you would have been fine with 31" arrows or so. 27" is short.

Whats your draw? I shoot 1916's out of a 40lb recurve I have.

Whats a real kicker is better your release gets, more stiff arrow you will need. Not sure of your release or how good it is. But when I started, I was also shoot 1816's and at the end of one year of shooting I moved to 2016s.

BC, I'm pretty confident I have a good release. I've been shooting recurves for somewhere around 50 years now. Long before compounds even existed. I don't 'pluck' the string like a lot of new shooters do. Shot my share of deer, rabbits and even a couple grouse while in a treestand with my recurves. My first buck was shot with a Bear Grizzly 40#.
I was thinking the same as you - If I can cluster the 1916s into nice little groups the 2115s should be even better. I'm going to see if I can get my hands on a couple 2018s to try.
Like reloading ammo - always looking for ways to improve. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.
BTW: Even with papertuning (checking), I was getting almost perfect tear with the 1916s, but a ragged hard tail right tear with the 2115s. Seems if my release was sloppy I would have gotten a tail left tear. (left on release, right at riser then back left)

Is the bow 55 @ 28" or at your draw length?
Like BC said, cutting them that short dramaticaly increased the dynamic spine.

The Easton charts are notorious for being wrong with traditional bows. Being that your arrows are cut to 27.5",I'm guessing you're drawing 26"...maybe 26.5". The 2115 has a deflection of around .460" whereas a 1916 is about .620"...big differance. And that's with 28" shafts. Cut them shorter than that and the spine increases...alot. If the 1916's are cut to 27.5",that'll stiffen them up a bit to shoot good. You're most likely drawing about 50-52lbs so with a good release, you're getting good flight. A 2016 would be a good choice(better than the 2115).

I am not sure if the shelf is center or not on that bow. But it also is critical to spine. 1/4" out of center can make the difference of shooting 2018's or shooting 1816s. Good luck.

Bronko,

Where did you order the 2115s from? Easton no longer makes that size and that was the size I use to shoot in a 31" arrow. When Easton discontinued the 2115 size, I had to go to a 32", 2215 arrow because of the stiffer spine when I needed a heavier arrow for feral hogs. I'm now shooting 32", 2212s out of all three of my bows, but if I can find a few dozen 2115s, I like to shoot those again.

nightwing - i got them on ebay. If I remember correctly there were a few full length arrows in 2115 on there.
BTW for sh*ts and giggles, I stripped a 45-60 carbon arrow of its vanes and shot it bare through the recurve and at short distance it flew pretty straight. I am in the process of fletching it with 3 4" feathers and going to see how it shoots. I have 2 doz of these puppies and if they fly good, I'm all set.

The carbons (at least the one I fletched) fly just as well as the 1916s. Now all I have to do is order more RW feathers. I only had the 3 left that I used on that arrow. Looks like I'm all set. Thanks for the responses guys.
