RE: Shot possibility question
Depends upon the shot. From high in an elevated treestand it might be iffy. However, it might also be a great shot; especially if he has his onside paw extended in front of him, which would open up the heart which is normally hidden behind his leg.

Just remember that the vitals are going to be a bit lower with him in this position. If he is in your confortable range you should have a nice trophy. I shot a big brown phase blacky in the mountains, from a steep angle above . I shot just a little high and one lunged him (complete pass through) and by the time we found the bear 2 days later the hide and the meat where ruined.[:@]

I' m not even going to pretend I know much of anything about a bear' s anatomy (because I don' t), but just guessing it sounds like you had a good chance at a shot--expecially a relaxed, unaware animal. Did you take the shot?

RE: Shot possibility question
Steve, don' t beat yourself up over the shot. Probably every one of us would have taken it, given the circumstances you describe. It was just one of those things that happen to all of us sooner or later.
