Goldtip weight system
I just thought I would share the weight system that I used today to weight some goldtip arrows. I got this idea from Troy/OH and modified a little to fit the materials I had on hand. I took a 4" 8/32 bolt and cut the head off making a 4" piece of all thread, I then cut the lip off a goldtip insert and screwed it down to the end of the all thread. I then glued the all thread to the back of a regular insert. With the 4" of all thread and two inserts with a 145gr tip raises the wieght of the 31" goldtip to 600gr on the nose and they fly absolutely fantastic out of both my 62" 60# @ 29" T/D Crusader and my 64" 57# @ 28" 1 piece crusader. It also shot very well out of another guys 60lb Timberspirit recurve. One other thing I noticed about the weighted goldtips was that they were very quiet off the bow. The compound guys at the archery shop had thier doubts about the whole thing and even after it shot bullet holes thru the paper they doubted it woudl shoot a broadhead, well it also shoots bulletholes with 145gr Wensel Woodsman heads too. I think that these will be the go to arrow for me when I do any pack hunting, more durable than wood or aluminum and still fairly inexpensive. Included is a photo of the weight system.

I would try some of those Arrow Dynamics shafts but they are so darn expensive. I just can' t see spending the extra. My new crusader shoots awsome. I might even shoot it better than the old one. So far everyone that I have let shoot it has been able to shoot great with it. Even a few wheelie bow shooters.

Great to hear. You know that Troy bought one of my Crusaders and is now selling his recurves. I told him if he shot it he' d be hooked. LBR told him the same thing. He didn' t listen, now he has the virus!!!!!
I pay about $90 for a dozen Trads unfletched, cut to my length with inserts. How much are the Gold tips?

I have found goldtip hunters for as little as 45$ a dozen for raw shafts. I got this six already fletched up and an extra six inserts for $39 at the local archery shop.

The FOC is way forward but you can' t argue with results. By all rights if the compound guys at the archery shop were right these arrows shouldn' t shoot worth a darn, but they do. THey shoot great. I went out yesterday and did a pretty extensive test using the wieghted goldtips, 2018 aluminums, and Tapered cedars. My first test was a deflection off brush test. To do this I shot thru several bushes and branches to test how they reacted. THe goldtips were by far the best at resuming thier original course after hitting an abstruction, followed by the 2018s with the tapered cedards a decided last place finisher. It seems all that weight up front would pull an arrow thru brush better and stay on course better. I shot in a fairly open area to see if wind was a big factor as some have mentioned. There wasn' t much of a breeze but it didn' t seem to affect the goldtips any more than the aluminums or the woods. Finally I checked overall drop at longer ranges to see if the carbons were more efficient. THe carbons were the heaviest by 30grs followed by the 2018s and then the tapered cedars 50gr lighter than the carbons. The carbons consistantly hit 10-12" higher at 40 yards than the 2018s or the tapered cedars. I know that is a pretty hard one to test accurately but I shot several arrows and took an average to get that result. I used the arrow tip as a site and aimed it every time at a dot on a bag target and marked where the arrows hit above it. From this I gather that the carbons are being more effeicent and holding thier energy longer than the cedars or aluminums. I' m waiting until a day with some wind to test the effects of wind on them.

Oh well. Now I find out that the traditional shoot I wanted to go to doesn' t allow carbons. Seems like you could use them in a ' ' Hunter division" since they are legal. Nothing to fret about; must be a good reason to someone.
Someone gave me a 2117 bareshaft and it flies good from three of my bows! Guess I' ll work up some or my 2018' s fly from all three bows. How does that work? The way the shelf is cut?
