Default Helping a friend with recurve

I shot with a friend last weekend and when he would shoot his recurve the arrow would slap the side of his riser just below the shelf. He shot 3 different recurves and all did the same thing, it was hitting hard enough to knock the varnish off. It seemed if he snap shot this didnt happen or it wasnt quite as severe. Any ideas of what the heck is causing this? he isnt a green horn. Thank you

I' m going to go with bad spine or bad tuning. I had a bit of a problem with that with some new arrows our of my longbow. Mess with the brace height and nock point height, and maybe point weight. If all that doesn' t work, maybe a different spine weight is needed. I' m not an expert, but this is what I' ve learned from my own problems and people around here helping me.

I' m wondering if he isn' t torquing the bow when he is holding it. If he torgued it enough that would acount for all three different bows doing the same thing. Tell him to relax his grip on the bow and see if that helps any. It could be that when he snap shoots he doens' t have the time to develop as much torque and thats why its seems better to snape shoot. My bet though is that he is choking the hell out of his bow and if he would relax his grip he wouldn' t be getting the torgue that is causing the bad clearance problems.

Thank you for your help, I also told him that it could be his arrows werent stiff enough. 1 bow is 60 lb 1 is 55 and one is 45 lbs. I bet he is chokeing the heck out of his bow. he doesnt use a wrist sling so maybe that would help, its not like he has never shot recurve but he is just getting back into it after many years with mainly his compound. Thanks again.

I agree with Josh and Branden--it could be either one, or a combination of both. Tell him to hold the bow gently, not like he' s trying to choke a snake to death. Also try some different spines of arrows or different weight points. This will help narrow it down.

I' ll bet he is torquing the string as he draws. Did he shoot fingers or use a release when he shot compounds?
