bigcountry,

Chase the first all yellow ring. you want all the diameter you can get. Also on some of these realy radiused staves can be decrowned to make things easier to deal with.
Yep, I'll hog off the sapwood and have a gander at that first late wood ring. If it's good, that'll be the back. If not, I'll go down to the next. Gotta be somewhat conservativewith a smaller diameter log like that. There's not a wholelot of extra wood to work with andeven with using that first ring, the back will be crowned pretty good. With that diameter log, the further into it you get, the more pronounced the crown will be on the back.

Chad, I'm taking a few hours of leave and leavingwork earlythis afternoon to head back and dig one particular log out of the bottom of the pile. Didn't get a great look at it yesterday, but what I saw looked promising.

Nah, it's not as daunting as it seems.Creating a smallformto make the recurves on aselfbow static recurve isn't hard to do. Make one selfbow static recurve and you'll be hooked. They're purrrty.

Not at all. You can make a simple caul and bend it with a heat gun. Osage likes dry heat. I built one using the back of a kitchen chair for my caul once. an old Kitchen chair that is.
