Default Shelf

What type of leather/skin is good for the shelf. I have a piece of leather that came with it and its getting a bit warn already. It's like the same leather thats on the grip. Its just a strip that doesn't cover the entire shelf. I think I can do better with something different along the lines of seal skin? What do you guys use?? What do you suggest?

Thanks

Joe b!

On my HH style bows, I use one piece leather. On my Adcock, I use sealskin, but I don't think I'd buy it again.

On the recurves, I use leather on theplate and carpet on the shelf. I also use elevated rests.

Are you sure you just don't need to reattach the leather? It may just need a little Barge Cement. I bet they just used leather with an adhesive side.

I use a piece of buckskin for the plate. On the shelf I've got a strip of self-adhesive velcro, the fuzzy part. Iglue a small match-sized piece of buckskin across the radiused shelf at the high point and lay the velcro over the top of that. The velcro gets replaced once a year. The setup leaves a small gap for the hen feather to slide through as the arrow is launched.

on my recurve i use a piece of old work glove that i cut and glue. the nice thing about doing it this way is i have a good supply of leather on hand, no pun intended, and i can use various thickness' to find that one that is what my set up likes.

If your getting alot of wear on your shelf, you might want to see if your spined right.

.... and that your nock point isn't a bit too low.

Any thin, pliable leather will work. I'm kinda partial to using suede when I've got it on hand. Just about any hobby shop sells bags of mixed scrap leather. All kinds, all colors and almost all good for shelf/plate covers.

I use moleskin on my shelf. Sometimes it last 5 years, the next time it last one year. Really depends how rough I am with my bow or what kind of habitat I'm in, meaning thick or open country stuff!
