Default Need help with recurve bow

My father recently gave me an old recurve bow, it is a ben pearson hawk 7370. It's marked on the side as a 45# draw weight and 28"draw length. Does anyone know anything about this bow?? Also what kind of arrows should I be shooting out of this thing? Thanks in advance.

Depending on your draw, start with some 2016 aluminum arrows at 30" to start. And if you need stiffer, take off 1/2" at a time.

I recommend bare shaft tuning.

You got to have feathers. The longer ones, the better stabilization. I shoot 5" shield feathers myself. And you want to shoot cock feather out (to the left if right handed).

You really should bare shaft tunewhen you get your form down. That might take up to a year. No joke. I suggest taking the 4064 arrows, and go shoot. Your going to change your form 10 times before you decide its right. And trying to bare shaft tune with a sloppy release, or bad form, can be a waste and usually gives false indicaters.

For example, when I started shoot traditional, bareshaft tuning showed a very stiff reaction, but after some years, same bow, same type arrow, it shows slightly weak. My release got crisper.

I suggest downloading the easton archery tuning guide. Or there is alot of good books on tuning and shooting bare bows. Here are a few I have read. I don't agree with them all, but good info in them all.

Make sure you check the bow out carefully or better yet have an expert take a look at it. Hopefully the bow was stored correctly.

Maybe while your there, have someone take a look at your draw and see about what you will be drawing to. It won't be exact at first but should be in the ballpark. They can also get you started in arrow setup. If you are shooting the bow at 28", I'd say you'll probably be shooting around 1916 aluminum, or 50/55 wood.

Also make sure that you only use Dacron string material.
