This is opening weekend of deer gun season in Indiana. Also the opener for small game. I usually stay out of the woods on this weekend, 'cause it looks like "the war of the pumpkin army" and confusion reigns. I'd go for small game, but I'm afraid they'd shoot my dog.
Boring!
Catching up on my reading, house cleaning, tackle repair, ect.
Do any of you experience the same thing?
Seems we've bred ourselves away from the table......
Pay no attention. Just the rantings of a house-bound old coot.

I know how it goes. This Wednesday is opening of shotgun in CT. I also usually stay out of the woods for the next 10 days. I plan to hunt this year as I was lucky enough to get a lottery selection for some WMA land with very limited people. I took my boys (8 and 9) and my labs out the last couple of weekends for small game. Never see anyone else during bow season. First time I went out during shotgun in CT 2 years ago, I saw more people then trees and I was hunting in a rather remote place that had 0 pressure during bow. I was use to hunting private land in GA and TN. Now my kids want to go back out but it's going to be a couple of weeks!!!!

I am lucky enough to have access to private land, some with very few hunters, some with none other than myself, but I am still nervous about going out on opening day--them high-powered rifles got quite a range on them!

Man, I feel for you guys. Here our bow season opens about a week before the general season (end of Aug- some regions earlier) but even during the general season I can bow hunt pretty much undisturbed. It's rare for me to bump into another hunter, in the woods. And that's hunting public land.

only 2 more months before the season ends...<img src=icon_smile_evil.gif border=0 align=middle>

heck we dont even wear orange up here. Also there really is no specific bow season for many species, its just one hunting season so we hunt when we can get out kinda thing.

Even back in Mn I would bowhunt during the rifle season and the doe I shot last year was during it, Also could have shot that 8 pointer just after I shot her so I know I can find bucks during the rifle season. Try and find escape corridors, most people wont hunt them opting for the bigger woods/swamps, look for small travel routes. It always worked for us even when I started rifle hunting my 9 pointer and spike came out of escape cover.

The thing about where I hunted whitetails was AFTER the rifle season it was slim pickings. I never did understand it as there were deer all over the place before the rifle season and you would see any real big numbers till spring.

I resemble that remark! I get out there with the rifle at this time. I love to hunt and am willing to go with the flow, even if it's not my personal style

Chad,

That is precisely why I am a bowhunter today. My last gun hunt was 18 years ago in West Virginia. I was &quot;out in the sticks&quot; 2/3 of the way up a ridge all by myself, I thought. Then I head a whining whistle of a bullet as it went over my head and then the sound of the loud retort of the rifle followed. Three more bullets whistled and the sound of the rifle followed in rapid order.

I crawled up behind a tree and said &quot;Lord, get me out of this alive and I'll sell my rifles and find another way of hunting, or quit.&quot; I did just that and bought my first compound. I wandered in the wilderness of gadgetry for 15 years until I sold my last three compounds and bought my first trad bow.

I now have a Chek-Mate Crusader and have found the bow for me! I'm not interested in going afield with the bloomin' pumpkin suits (John, I like that!)!!

I haven't been seeing many deer this year. Our gun season opens this Saturday. I plan to be in a tree an hour before daylight and stay there till dark. The gun hunters usually move alot of deer to me.
