Hi LBR, I've been considering investing in a TK recurve and noticed that the Check-Mate bows are very reasonably priced. Do you know what the average lead time is for ordering one of these bows?

Bodkin,

Good luck contacting Joe, he is very very hard to get hold of.

Chad,

The two bolt system supposedely takes a dry fire much better than a single bolt and pin system.
The alignment pins used on your Chek-Mate bows seem to be thick and well made
But some alignment pins I have seen are so small they are pathetic.
The Sley has metal alignment sleeves for the bolts, micarta overlays on both sides of the limb butt, micarta on the riser face, and the most massive limb tips of any recurve I've ever seen.
The tips on my Sley are even more massive than any Long Bow I have seen. They are micarta overlayed on both sides just like the limb butts.
Is all this really needed ?
Not really, but I love overbuilt hell for strong bows like the Sley.
My Bowman compound just happens to be a monster strong bow.
It's the strongest compound in history and is way overbuilt also.
I just happen to like my bows built like a tank.
The next recurve I have in mind is a Wings of the Wind with all micarta riser, double limb bolts and horn tips and horn overlays on
the riser. The Wings is a brute strong bow that is overlooked by most people.

Thanks for the insight Sag--honestly, I hadn't payed any attention to other's td systems and didn't realize that some might not be as strong.

I don't recall ever seeing a Wings of the Wind--who is the bowyer and where is he (she?) located?

Chad,

Dave Bickish builds the Wings bows.
On the website it shows them with a single bolt and pin system but you can order them with two bolts also.
I don't particularly like the points Dave has on his risers but you can order them sans points.
You can draw/sketch a bow of your choice on paper, send it to Dave and he will build it for you.
The one I want will be black, yellow, and red micarta.
Black riser with two yellow stripes on the outside, single red center stripe with with all stripes bordered by thin white accent lines and horn overlays.
Bamboo and carbon for the limbs.
I think it will look cool.
Not beautiful like a Trails End. Just cool, lol.
Actually, I have been blasted by bowyers om Leather Wall by stating my beliefs about the weak small allignment pins found on some bows.
Never have mentioned any bows by name either.
But I noticed, in almost every case, the bowyers who complained were the one's who use the small weak alignment pins.
Hey, maybe they do work just fine.
But, imo, stronger is better.
I guess, I get this mindset from my bodybuilding/weightlifting days. :^)

Micarta and/or phenolic risers seem to be about as bomb-proof as you can get (I have seen that they are not 100% foolproof though), but the added weight turns me off bigtime. Guess that is one of the reasons I prefer a longbow.

CaptJack, have you talked to Bob or know him? I was wondering why he doesn't warranty his bows if you use "high performance" (Fast Flight, Dynaflight, 450+, etc.) strings. I have been meaning to ask him myself, but haven't taken the time to do it.

Chad- known Bob many years- no- I don't know why he doesn't guarantee his bow with FastFlight strings but I'm sure he would tell you. He uses Micarta on his limb tips so the FastFlight strings shouldn't bother the limbs.
His risers only have Micarta accent pieces they're made out of Durawood.

Curveman,

Tell you what.
I am very impressed with the Border bows.
Wouldn't mind having one in the least. I think they are very handsome and unique bows.
I believe the carbon used in the riser is a great idea.
Sometimes I forget Border until you bring them up again.
Will have to give them a closer look.
