Guss - here are a couple thoughts, take em or leave em but I thought I'd try and throw some theology your way.
The cold hard truth is that your parents aren't going to be around much longer. They willeventually leaveyou for a better place. How old is your Dad ? 50? 60 ? 70?......They've obviously brought you up decently and given you enough love that you deeply respect them and that's wonderful. Maybe you should have a heart to heart with your Dad and tell him your thoughts..... you might be suprised by what your hear.

I personally believe that there comes a time whena person becomesmorally obligated to "pay it forward" and propagate that same love and respect they received as children and young adults. In short, I believe the big plan is for us tobuild our own love filled families and re-pay our parents and our creatorby teaching, lovingand giving to others as they have done with us.

If part of your big plan is to make a commitment to your girl and build a family and/or enjoy your lives together in Alaska, or wherever, then that is what you need to do.
Don't wait around to just see what happens. Have a plan andmake decisions based on where and how you see yourself in 5, 10, 20 or 30 years.

Does it require marriage? savings? back-up or return plan ? Extended vacation to see what things are really like? Make it happen or come up with another plan and make that happen.

Would I like to live in Alaska ? You bet. Would I go there without being married ? Only if I planned on never being married. Would I go there without a job lined up or some sort of professional or technical training and job experience? Only if I won the lottery or enjoyed spending weeks at a time on the icey sea in a tug boat full of smelly fish and smellier men.

The decision doesn't have to be irreversable. Go check it out, you may decide to stay or not. It may open opportunities for the family that they might not otherwise have--Your dad may have a couple of great hunting/fishing trips to Alaska that he wouldn't other wise have. I expect Alaska would be a great place to live, but check out everthing: cost of living vs. income, weather, transportation, crime, the whole works.

I'm with True Position on this one.....Alaska will always be there, your friends and family won't.I moved about 10hrs away from home, and look forward to Thanksgiving and Xmas breaks all year long justto go back home and hunt with the old man and my friends for a few days......a little side bar, I moved to a place where the hunting sucks IMO, so I'm sure that makes a diff. But, in the end I'd like to be back with friends and family are....2006season I will be! Sounds like you in a pretty darn good place the way it is. Good luck

Guss,
I am a Senior Nursing student and currently work in a Cardiac ICU as a Cardiac Monitor Tech.

First - I moved away from my family 4 yrs ago when my wife and I got married. Its tough to leave your job, friends, family, and locality for a new life. However, when I look back I'm glad I did it. But, there are many times I miss my family - esp around holidays, family events, birthdays, etc.

Opportunities for nurses is booming everywhere - be they hospitals, doctors offices, clinics, home care, etc. The can be permanent positions, pier diem, or agency.

Most health care facilities want to see 1 yr of previous employment on the applicants resume prior to hiring them. Not always - but agencies do. Its shows the nurse has had some experience being employed in the hospital setting.

Just a thought - many agencies hire for contract positions with hospitals for 3, 6 or 1 year positions. Most offer housing assistance for their agency nurses as well as expense allowances.
I know a 36 yr old agency RN at my hosp that was receiving over $1200 per month in a housing allowance! Sheesh - thats a mortgage payment for God's sake! An agency position might give you guys an opportunity to see how you like it there and if you REALLY want to stay. Many times agency nurses are offered permanent employment thru the hospital directly at some point of their contract.

Today we have cars, trains, and planes making travel easier and less time consuming. Yes - you won't be hanging out with your family and friends every week - thats for sure.

Your sure faced with a difficult decision - I know I was.

When I go home to visit I know now that moving was the best thing I ever did. For me. But it isn't an easy thing going from a town you know to a new one and not knowing many people, and being in a strange community.

Good luck with your decision! Wish you the best either way!

I still have a year to go to get a Degree in Environmental Consevation, ya what am I going to do with that. I think I would be happiest building houses or laying bricks, I have experiance in that .

Guss,
I worked for NYSDEC for 3 yrs before relocating out here to get married. I loved working for DEC.

I don't have a Wildlife Degree but it sure was great. Pathology for Wildlife was in my building as well. What a neat experience that was!

Guss, I always had a dream of living in a place like Alaska or Montana. My wife and I made the move from Pennsylvania to Montana and lived there for 4 years. During that time my friends came out every year and bowhunted with me only they got to hunt more than I did! I had to go to work and they had two weeks of pure hunting vacation. Just because you live there doesn't mean you can just walk out your back door and hunt like you can now. I had to drive to the mountains to hunt and that was a 5 hr. round trip because you can't live where you can hunt unless your independently wealthy or have a special practice of some kind. Alaska is bigger yet and things are even harder to get to. Go where your heart is and vacation to the other places.
