Laurie McLaurin – Great-Granddaughter of Mississippi Senator and Governor Anselm J. McLaurin
Laurie McLaurin is the great-granddaughter of Mississippi senator and governor Anselm J. McLaurin. She was married to Robert Janin and Robert Adams Moss Jr. and lived in Louisiana for most of her life. She passed away suddenly on Sept. 4, 2001, due to heart failure. She was 85. She was a lifelong Louisianan. In addition to her distinguished public service record, Laurie McLaurin was the subject of a senior exercise video.

In the 1890s, Anselm J. McLaurin was elected governor of Mississippi. He was one of the last Confederate veterans to serve as governor of the state. He was the father of ten children. McLaurin served as the state’s governor from 1895 to 1900. During his tenure, he was instrumental in passing legislation such as an increased tax millage bill and dealing with the yellow fever outbreak in Jackson. He left office on January 16, 1900. He went on to serve in the U.S. Senate from 1901 until 1909. He died on December 22, 1909, and was buried in Brandon, Mississippi.


Robin McLaurin Williams is the great-great-grandson of Anselm J. McLaurin, a former governor and senator of Mississippi. He is also the great-grandson of Laurie McLaurin, a former model from Jackson, Mississippi. Both women are of Irish and English descent. His parents were married in 1952 and had two elder half-brothers.

Despite being the great-granddaughter of a Mississippi senator and governor, she was born in Jackson, Mississippi. She was raised in New Orleans and could enthral listeners with stories about her great-grandfather, Anselm Joseph McLaurin. Laurie also remained interested in current events and had a twinkle in her eyes.

A descendant of Laurie Mclaurin was married to Robert J. Janin, who is Robin’s great-great-grandfather. This family is documented in Volume 26 of the Lineage Book for Daughters of American Colonists, written by Douglas Brewster. Several sources mention Janin in their families’ ancestry, including Robert’s obituary from the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Another source states that Herbert Lawrence Janin married Julia Louise Gassman on 7 February 1892. The 1940 census lists Robert as single.
