Opinion on head for my set up
I shoot a Parker feather mag II at 61 lbs. and 27" draw length. I am shooting Easton carbon epic 500 which weigh 344 grains with a 100 grain head. I am concidering shooting the spit fire broad heads in this bow as they fly great. These are really tough heads as my father in law shoots them in his cross bow and has taken 3 deer with the same head with no damage to the head. In Virginia, you can use a cross bow if medicaly unable to shoot a bow. I can shoot them thru my 3" broad head target with no damage. My question is, Do I have enough bow to use these heads on white tails. Don

DoninVa, I am not the most knowledgable person on this sight concerning mechanical heads. But I do know a little bit about your bow. I feel safe in saying that with your current setup, the absolute fastest you could be shooting is 250fps. And I am probably being generous with that number. That would mean you are producing about 47.75 lbs. of Kenetic Energy. Now I realize my knowledge of mechanicals is limited, but I pay attention to the guys that obviously DO know about them. With the KE you are shooting, I think you would be severely limited in your choice of mechanical heads.
Maybe 5 shot, moonge, Bowfanatic, or one of the other guys who know about mech. heads can steer you in the right direction now that a KE number has been established.
Good Luck!

Don, I don't think you are generating enough kinetic
energy to safely be shooting NAP Spitfires from what
you have told us. Not only do the Spitfires have a large
cutting diameter (1 1/2", but they also are the only
mechanical that uses blade retention clips instead of
'o' rings...a lot of energy is used opening the blades
and with the 1 1/2" cut, you probably need 55-60 lbs. of KE
to use these. If you're set on using a mechanical, I'd
recommend Rocky Mountain Snypers or Rocket Steelheads(100 gr.)
...both produce excellent penetration.
Here is a link to figure your kinetic energy:

Take a look at some of these broadhead test results:

I was shooting a similar setup a few years ago and I also
have a 27" draw and was using Spitfires...I did not get
favorable results. This is a excellent broadhead, but
IMO needs to be shot from a setup generating some high KE.
Good Luck

I think that the Golden Key Deadhead 100 fixed blade or the Golden Key Demon mechanical would be a great choice for your setup. Both shoot great and are very durable. If you live near a Dicks Sporting Goods they have the Deadheads on sale for 9.99 for 3 which is a great deal!

Thanks for the responces guys. I was afraid I was barking up the wrong tree. I was going to use the 85 gr. Spitfires with 1 1/4" cutting diameter but I don't think I will chance it.I just knew you guys could point me in the right direction as I get lost often.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Sorry I am a little late on this one, but I agree. You will be better off with a good fixed blade head. Muzzy, rocky ti-100 or thunderheads are great choices. If accuracy is your main goal check out the new Slick trick broadheads. they are super accurate.

I'd go with the Rocket Steelhead 100 or the GK Demon for mechs. However, you are on the low end for KE.
For a devastating fixed blade I would opt fotr the GK Deadhead,an excellent head at an excellent price. When I tested the GK Deadhead 100 I wasn't expecting much because the GKs were inexpensive. Let me tell you, these heads are best buys!!! Checkout 5 Shots report on these wicked fixed blades. They actually received as high of a rating as ANY fixd blade he has ever tested. Whats awesome is these heads are about HALF the price of what most top of the line heads are going for these days. This wonderfull surprise has made me take a very serious look at all the GK heads. Can't wait to take 'em to the tiber in a couple of weeks.
