Where to learn the technical side??
Where would one go to learn the technical side of archery (bowsmithing?)?? Some day, I want to open a pro-shop (we need a good one in this around here!), but I need to learn the technical side (vs. the business management side) first. Are there classes that you can take (community college?)? Is there school that anyone has heard of/been to?? Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks!
Thanks!

RE: Where to learn the technical side??
Other than some books and magazines along with many websites I don't know of any classes for it. I'd bet that most of our tech guys here learned as I did myself, through experimentation, experience working in the industry and hands on approach.
I know of no better place to learn than this forum alone. I honestly feel we have some of the best technical oriented members on the web today and although many of them share in other forums as well, they all seem to come together here to solve almost all situations. All one needs to do is ask and the wealth of information is endless.
I applaud you for wanting to open a shop. It's no easy task, especially with the Walmarts, Bass Pro, Gander Mt. superstores that everyone is in AAUHH about. I find the little shops to be the most personal and probably the most efficient. I myself would/have opened a shop some time ago if it wasn't for the demanding hours. I frequent many in my area and offer up to date information, tutorials and what not where I can. They all seem to do rather good however I am disappointed at the amount of people who flocked to the new Gander Mountain and forgot about the little guy.......

Tarheal great question! Rob gave some good advice.I have taken up the thought also.PSE has a couple of schools one in Arizona and one somewhere in Indiana I believe. All of what I have learned(wich isn't much<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>}came frome reading these forums, and several others through the last couple of years,a few books, videos and asking many questions. The most informative book that I have read is written by Larry Wise titled Tuning And Silencing Your Bow.It is jam packed with great info. Also Apple Archery has a video out that Ralph & Vicki Ciancerillo host that is pretty informative.PSE does too. When you get a bowpress and start doing a bit of tinkering you'll also learn many things.Oh yeah BTW website's such as eastons,Hoyt,BO Jackson, and of course huntingnet have excellent info on tung.Bill D>

RE: Where to learn the technical side??
If you really want to start learning quickly, I think one of the best ways, is to start working on older bows and your friend's bows. Myself, I got a bow press, a serving jig with serving string, bow tuning tools and I started taking my older bows apart and putting the back together. Once I got confident with tuning and serving strings, I started volunteering to help friends out. Most of them don't know how to fine tune their equipment and wouldn't even think of serving their strings or changing a cable. At this time I've started making my own strings, not to save money, but to get the quality I want and to never have to worry about being caught without a good string. There is nothing that is extremely complicated. Getting a bow shooting well with a basic tuning is fairly easy.
There is a lot of info on the net and in books to help you along the way. If you find something that stumps you, post a question here and you're likely to get more suggestions than you want.
